Book Review: "Dead City" is a "Shear" Delight
Summary: 3 Stars
Most books in the zombie subgenre are abysmal, with bad writing and worse editing. "Dead City" is a pleasant exception. This action story keeps a tight grip until the end and introduces likeable characters, loathsome characters, and - of course - characters with a craving for human flesh.
The bulk of the story takes place in one night and stars a philosophizing San Antonio cop on the three-to-eleven shift, Officer Eddie Hudson. After hell breaks loose in his Texan city, Eddie wants to get home to his wife and baby - and all that stands between him and his family are legions of zombies. They have been infected by a fast-spreading virus carried in by refugees from Houston, which has been hit with devastating hurricanes resulting in corpse-filled floodwaters.
The publisher, the Pinnacle imprint of Kensington Publishing Corp., might not have appreciated some of the finer points of the story. The blurb "They Won't Stay Dead..." is used on the front cover and there are lots of mentions on the back cover about "the living dead," despite the fact that it's made clear in the book that the infected aren't technically deceased. But that's a subtle point when the result of the virus is shambling automatons who want to rip out Eddie's intestines and scarf them down like spaghetti.
As for the usual typos and other distracting errors, I found only one, surprise of lovely surprises: the word "shear" when what was meant was "sheer." That's a pretty small gripe about what is an otherwise fine addition to this usually fraught-with-crap subgenre. If you like zombie books, and gosh almighty, you probably do or you wouldn't be reading this, I recommend that you add this fast-paced, one-night read to your library of the undead.
