Book Reviews of Dear John

Book Review: Very sad...but maybe not in a very good way...
Summary: 3 Stars

I started reading this book last year. The beginning was kind of boring, so after a few months I picked up the book again...and finished it in a few days. The book was overall good with very likeable characters, but the ending...o why so sad? I love Nicholas S.! I've read so many books of his and they were all sad...but heartfilling sad. This was just tragicly sad. I didnt like that. I like to know that love conquers all...and even though they loved each other...they just ended up being unhappy...Ah! Just too sad and depressing. This Nicholas S's book did not leave me feeling that love is the greatest thing in the world, like his other books have. So, if i recommend a book of his to anyone...I wont recommend this one.

Book Review: WOW!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

What an emotionally engaging, powerful story! I don't know how he does it, but Nick Sparks once again has captured and revealed the essence of the deepest and truest kind of love, particularly the heartwrenching sacrifices one is willing to make for the other. Very well done!!! On par with his early masterpieces.

Book Review: Why John?
Summary: 1 Stars

I may of been thinking selfishly on this (If I were John), but...he pours his heart out for this girl! And what he gets in return is heartache in a war zone (already disparing), and then loses his one and only family member - his father. This man was truthful, faithful, and an easy forgiving individual that only wanted that woman he loved and thought she loved back. And she goes and sticks it you know where. This book is rediculously depressing. Well written, but I hope never to come across another book so emotionally stirring as this one. WARNING! To those that have any inclination of what a "Dear John" letter is, and have lived a similar situation, don't read it. Or if you're stationed in Iraq as I am, definately DON'T READ IT!

Book Review: don't read the amazon reviews
Summary: 5 Stars

There are too many spoilers in the comments by other reviewers, you will enjoy this masterpiece a lot more, if like me, you don't know how it concludes. I picked up the audio book at the library read by Holter Graham (to perfection) and fell into a very realistic tale of Savannah the pretty college student and John a soldier on two-week leave from the Army. The easy "down-home" storytelling and dialogue was so real it almost feels like it's not made up. Nicholas Sparks is a fantastic writer who I've enjoyed before but Dear John was easily on a higher level of entertainment value for this reader.

Book Review: wow - heartbreaking
Summary: 5 Stars

At first I was upset reading how the story was going to end in the beginning of the book. I soon was hooked and wanted to see how it was going to end, if they weren't going to end up together. When he met Savannah I didn't originally like her character because of the whole religious thing. I did think Savannah was unrealistic and originally did not like her character. I have to admit when the storyline changed in the end and Savannah ended up being different than she was originally, I liked it. It was good that we got to see how life changes you and all your best plans can be unrealistic when life comes along.

The ending was satisfying although heartbreaking. I loved this book. I think it speaks to a wide variety of audiences that love does not always go as planned and people change. Ideally I would want to be together, but I guess I am glad they are not for the purposes of this story.
