Read the play, want to like the music it was adapted to, but don't quite. Moody, atmospheric, emotional, think the title song sucks. Angela Lansbury is an old hero of mine, or was - until like Bernadette Peters she went sondheim. When Richard Burton confused infer and imply in his liner notes on his LP of Hamlet, and when nobody involved in the production of Sugar (not even Cyril Ritchard or Jule Styne whom I had previously admired) knew the difference between lay and lie - talent don't make ya smart! But in this, in her pre-sondheim days, Lansbury was wonderful. She had some music to sing.
