Book Review: A Kafkaesque tale expanded to Proustian proportions

I've given this book five stars because it does exactly what it sets out to do. Simple things should be expostulated in complex ways, and this book starts with the simplest, "What if...?" From there, it's a long, casual conversation, in the simplest of language, primarily monosyllables spiced liberally with cultural references and folk sayings. But the emphasis is on "casual." There is no sense that the author is preaching; he is simply making observations, often including the reader in a conspiratorial "we." It's always possible in such writing to overlook the tremendous amount of humor that buoys it up. Not "Ha! Ha!" humor; but a sort of continuous delight in the resourcefulness and invention that make this an unusually pleasant read for a modern novel. (Most of them are so deadly earnest, I think.) And regarding the "novel" appellation, I kept thinking, "This would make a good short story by Kafka" until the author reveals his admiration for Proust--another joke. Yes, 250 pages would make a good short story by Marcel Proust, and here you have it by an author at the height of his creative powers.
