Book Reviews of Deception on His Mind

Book Review: elizabeth george can't write fast enough for me........
Summary: 5 Stars

i came across elizabeth george's novels years ago when a friend was giving one away to a jumble sale and i picked it up because of my love of all things british! I have never been dissappointed with any of her novels and find the characters real and the plots fascinating--Deception on His Mind was no different! I'm waiting for her next arrival! By the way...if you like brit novels like I do and are looking for other great authors of english mysteries and detective stories try Martha Grimes or Minette Walters--they measure up to E.G. and Grimes especially has some particularly lovable characters (i.e., Melrose Plant!)

Book Review: great book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love Elizabeth George and her characters never cease to amaze me. The plot can be quite macabre and a lot of the scenes seem so real, it's scary. Great stuff to read!

Book Review: made me read everything she's written
Summary: 4 Stars

As a study in character and culture, it was excellent. I read and savored it as I learned about a different cultural view. Because of this book I have gone back to read other books by this author as she certainly is a class above most mystery writers who are aiming strictly for a "who-done-it" plot drive piece of fluff.

Book Review: pare it down, please!
Summary: 2 Stars

I would have given this book a rating of 1 out of 5, except that the plot was interesting. This is the third Elizabeth George book I have read, but I couldn't get through this one. The author has an obsessive compulsive style of writing that is irritating--every bite taken, every sip taken--is added as a boring beat, until I want to scream, get on with the story--move it along! Finally, when I realized there were at least 300 more pages to go, I skipped to the end. This author would benefit from an editor who would dare to tell her to cut out a lot needless, uninteresting details. I do think she has good plots, but I don't think I'll be buying any more of her books.

Book Review: unbelievable ending ruins a decent book
Summary: 2 Stars

*be warned, spoilers ahead* There are plenty of reviews here so mine will be superfluous, but I can't pass up the opportunity to vent about this book. There are lots of good things in her little snapshot of British race relations, small town politics, etc. But as a mystery, the book falls flat with a completely stupid ending. There is no possible way that the murderer could have done the murder as it is described in the book. George has spent considerable (!) time building up a picture of the cloistered existence of these Pakistani women: they rarely leave the house, they are never seen by strange men, etc. etc. etc. and suddenly we're supposed to believe this woman sneaks out of the house to trail a guy around long enough to figure out his habits and routines, then she steals a jet-ski, races across the sea to set up an elaborate trap to murder him while making it appear as an accident (not noticing the other person lurking around watching), and jet-skis home, all unnoticed by her ever-present family members? Give me a break. It's lazy writing and it's insulting to readers to give them a crap ending like that after ALL that build-up.
