Book Reviews of Deep DishBook Review: "And then what happens?..." Summary: 4 Stars
One of the great things about pizza is that even if it's not your exact favorite kind, and even if it doesn't come from your exact favorite place, it's still a pizza, and, like Deep Dish, darn tasty.
Sudsier than any TV soap, Deep Dish boasts a cast of dizzyingly scandalous characters, their lives elaborately linked by family ties, secret lust, and the occasional stained skirt. As with any soap opera, the characters are painted in a few broad strokes (the Feisty-but-Loveable Grandma, the Bed-Hopping Hotty, the Compulsively Overeating Fat Guy), and the plot is swept along by mishaps, misunderstandings, and more than one Miss who's really a Mister. The characters relationships can get complicated, and it's sometimes tricky to keep track, so dog-ear the helpful Who's Who at the front of the book. The writing sometimes stumbles, but even when it falls, a gasp-inducing plot twist helps it back to its feet and on we go. Our Host Mr. Harshbarger appears to have a nose for scandal and a Doppler-like ear for gossip, which are certainly two of the most desirable qualities in a guide through Gay Chicago in the seventies. The story is firmly rooted in its period by scene-boosting pop culture references, and the sex in this pre-AIDS smorgasbord is frequent and uncomplicated. Many of our long-donged fantasies are brought to life on the page, including the Hot Repair Guy, the Football Hero, and the Priest (not to mention the Compulsively Overeating Fat Guy - don't judge me!!). Pants (and towels) are dropped and dicks are brandished as often as in an over-lit porno film, but porn is a lot like pizza: you need a wad of napkins, and if you're spent and panting at the end, you got your money's worth.
This is Marc Harshbarger's debut novel, and I look forward to enjoying his next outing, be it sequel or a whole new scene. If you're a fan of juicy gay fiction, this is a great addition to your shelf. If you like scandal, seduction, and sex, buy this book. If you like slapstick, show tunes, and the seventies, buy this book. No matter who you are, you'll probably see yourself in at least one of the myriad characters, and if you're an Irish-American from the Midwest, you'll probably recognize your whole Fam Damily! There are a few laugh-out-loud moments, and anytime people on the train are turning to see what all the gasping is about, you've got a winner.
