Book Reviews of Deep DishBook Review: A Winner ! A Perfect Summer Read!! Summary: 5 Stars
Marc Harshbarger steps back to the gay ole days of the 1970's with a rollickingly boisterous and heartfelt joy of a novel! I had to have a dollop of "deep dish" daily until it was all consumed! Written at a snappy pace, with great characters with incredible names and amazing secrets and lies etc. this is a read for anyone who loves a fun ride down a road filled with crazy twists and turns! I hunger for more of this literary taste treat and cannot wait for the next installment!! Yummy Yumm Yum !!
Book Review: Deep Devlish Deviant Delights! Summary: 5 Stars
From the delightfully twisted synapses of Marc Harshbarger, "Deep Dish" has exploded onto the circuit of modern queer story telling. Combining traditional serial-style storytelling with a flair for camp and unexpected plot twists, "Deep Dish" satisfies the readers palate for food, sex, humor, and things that go bump in the night. Don't let this 'dish' pass you by!
Book Review: Harshbarger Reminiscent of Maupin ! Summary: 4 Stars
Marc Harshbarger is a great storyteller. "Deep Dish" was a most enjoyable read, however, I have to agree with some of the other reviewers as there were just so many characters (thank God for the Who's Who at the beginning of the book). About a third of the way through I had the characters down and found it less necessary to depend on the character preface. MH has a terrific wit and I found myself laughing out loud several times. The story moves along at a fast pace. A little disappointed in that I wanted some of the situations to come to a conclusion, only to come to the end of the book to find out that in order to find out what happens I have to read the next installment. I most likely will, however I am hoping that the cast of characters is a little more limited.
Book Review: Just hilarious Summary: 5 Stars
X-rated soap opera (I mean that in a good way) that takes place in 1975. It's about a bunch of heavily dysfunctional families getting together for a wedding. Naturally things go out of control quickly.
Take the night time soap operas "Dallas", "Dynasty" and "Soap", throw in some X-rated sex, make the plots move at rocket speed and this is what you get:) Hilarious, dirty and VERY quick-moving book. The year 1975 is captured perfectly and the story never stops moving. The dialogue is sharp and vicious and often hilarious with a HUGE cast of characters running about. (The author helpfully has a three page listing of "Who's Who" at the beginning of the book). This was a book I picked up one lazy Sunday afternoon thinking I'd just read a few chapters...but I couldn't put the damn thing down! The characters are three-dimensional realistic people--not the cliches you read in other books. The situations are over the top but perfectly fit the story. There's also plenty of hot guy on guy sex in this:) This is a must read for gay guys or anyone looking for a fast, funny, vicious book that never stops. There's even a sequel ("Deeper Dish") which I'm definetely going to get. Highly recommended.
Book Review: Not great, but certainly entertaining Summary: 3 Stars
For the most part, I found this book very entertaining. Harshbarger is certainly a competent writer with a quick wit and naughty sense of humor. The main issue I have with the book is the extraordinary number of characters. I was constantly referring back to the cast of characters in the front. After awhile I found that tiring. I really liked the "cliffhanger" chapter endings. They kept me reading onward. Despite the confusing number of characters, "deep dish" was certainly worth a read. I actually give this book a 3 and 1/2 star rating.
