Book Reviews of Deep Storm: A Novel

Book Review: Can't Put It Down! Save it for a Weekend Because You'll Definitely Stay Up Late.
Summary: 5 Stars

I read this book in a single day it was so good! I couldn't put it down! If you are looking for good science fiction, and are having trouble finding good books out there that you haven't read, then look no farther, because you will be thoroughly satisfied after reading this one.

I don't want to describe anything more than what the book description says because it will spoil it, but it does kind of remind you of the "Abyss" movie and "Sphere". Also, what I will say is each chapter leaves you wanting to read the next one, and the mysteries surrounding the story keep you fixed all the time accelerating to the end.

---*** THE BOTTOM LINE ***---
* This is a MUST get book, it's that entertaining.
* You won't want to stop reading it, so save it for vacation or a weekend when you can stay up late and won't worry about not getting any sleep.

Book Review: Can't put it down.
Summary: 5 Stars

Love this book. Read most of this author's books. They are all great.

Book Review: Caught me off guard
Summary: 5 Stars

Why five stars? I finished reading this book today, during the middle of the afternoon when I should have been busy trying to meet my own novel's impending deadline. I'm a huge fan of the Preston/Child combo books, but had never read one of Child's solo books. But having read and enjoyed all of Preston's solo books I figured Deep Storm was worth a shot.

And I was not only not disappointed, I was pleasantly surprised. While in some ways Deep Storm smacks of Crichton's Sphere, and perhaps a little of Cameron's Abyss, it is a deep sea thriller that stands as it's own unique story. The characters are easy to enjoy and quite memorable. The science is impressive and clearly required gobs of research. But I think what I appreciated most was the writing. I find, too often now, that I have to force my way through the first few chapters of a novel in the science thriller/action adventure genre, but this was not the case with Deep Storm. I found the story instantly engaging and readable.

And the premise revealed at the climax had me "ahhing" out loud. It's just so cool. Could there be a sequel in the works? It is certainly set up for one, but like Ice Limit, I don't think we'll ever see one. I'm afraid a sequel to this book would become more science fiction than a science thriller and to my knowledge, neither Preston or Child has gone that route in earnest (meaning no space ships or aliens or such).

This is a serious must buy. Loved it. And am heading off to purchase Child's other solo books.

Book Review: Child's Best Solo Effort
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm glad that I was brave enough to try this book; after the disappointment I felt while reading Utopia and Death Match, I was hesitant.

Deep Storm is a highly entertaining thriller with a morality message that doesn't bog down the plot. The characters aren't sketched out much, but in a thriller like this that doesn't really matter. The lean plot and tight narrative drive this book quickly, and make it easy to polish off.

Book Review: Child's best solo effort yet!
Summary: 5 Stars

Preston and Child continue to crank out winners with their Pendergast stories, but their solo efforts have met with mixed reviews. "Deep Storm" is a story that will lay those naysayers to rest. Child creates a plausible storyline mixed with fascinating background and lifelike characters. While I'll agree with a few similarities to "Ice Limit", the ending to this one is much more satisfying and makes sense. As each new secret of what's truly buried under the sea is uncovered, you are slowly exposed to a story with enough depth and twists to keep you glued to the book until the final pages. An excellent book from start to finish.
