Book Reviews of Deep Storm: A Novel

Book Review: Entertaining, a trifle predictable
Summary: 4 Stars

Deep Storm is the story of a naval doctor who is hired to work on a top secret deep sea oil derrick. But things are not what they seem and Doctor Crane soon finds himself hip deep in mystery and conspiracy. I enjoyed Deep Storm, but found it predictable. It seems inevitable that any fiction involving a deep sea expedition would turn out the way this tale did in the end.

I also didn't care for the portrayal of Military in this book, either. Particularly Corollas. He just seemed so over the top. I felt the saboteur plot was a bit unnecessary. Do I really need to hear how a killer blows someone up with a airpump? Overall, 4 stars. Entertaining, would like to see a sequel... But no more gratuitous violence, please.

Book Review: Excellent
Summary: 5 Stars

I have enjoyed a lot this novel, for all of those that are inconditional fans of Child and Preston, this is a must. It provides excitement from the begining to the end. The final is just to make us think for a while...

Book Review: Excellent!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This was the first book of Child (and Preston) that I have read. I loved it! I stayed up all night (literally) to read it because I couldn't put it down.

The whole atmosphere of the book was exhilarating. The ending was somewhat surprising - and a little disappointing that they did not find something they could keep - especially since I'm all hyped up throughout most of the book wondering what is down there. I pictured an underground city or remnants of some sort. I will probably re-read this book a couple times, I'm sure.

This book led me on to other books by the author, and I am now a fan.

Book Review: Extraordinary book!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a book that I found so interesting, with a unique plot, that I read it more than once over a week or so. This for me is so rare as to happen only a few times in my life. Possibly the writer himself didn't think it was anything special beyond 'another book', but if so I only hope he produces more books with this kind of shock value.

It has lots of atmosphere, plenty of strong characterization, but little of it is predictable and not all villains end up villains etc. All this made it even better when, toward the end, we find out what's really down there, and it just couldn't be any better. Naturally no spoilers from me, but get a copy and read it! It fits very well into many important topics today and this book won't rapidly become obsolete, unlike thrillers with Iraq as the centerpiece, for example. Also, if "Deep Storm" is not made into a movie, this will be Hollywood's loss- and our loss too.

Book Review: Follows Classic Thriller Format - But it didn't thrill me
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a big fan of Preston and Child when they write together. Their solo efforts are usually not up to their combined skills. This is no exception. Story arc, speed, and characterizations come out of the Thriller 101" genre style. Nothing really surprised me. The science premise was interesting, but there was nothing that gave me the "I can't put it down" feeling. Good fun but nothing exceptional.
