Book Review: "Deeper Than the Dead"

The book starts off with a female body in the woods.
Four fifth grade students took a short cut home
after school and literally fell onto the body. One
of the deputies went to Oak Knoll Elementary school
and reported what had happened. Miss Navarre, the
fifth grade teacher, went to the woods. It was her
students. Miss Navarre took three of the students
home to explain what had happened to their parents.
The fourth, Cody Roache, took off running because he
was so scared.
Detective Tony Mendez is assigned to the case. He
thinks there is a serial killer on the loose. There
were several cases with the same mode of operation.
Detective Mendez called a friend of his at Quantico,
FBI Agent Vince Leone, from the Behavioral Sciences
Unit. Vince went to Oak Knoll, a small college town,
in an unofficial capacity. Agent Leone wasn't there
to take over the case, only to help Detective Mendez.
It was very suspenseful for me not knowing who the
serial killer was until almost the end of the book.
There are a lot of characters and they all played
sufficient roles in the drama. Anne Navarre seem
to be the main character.
The ending did not come together as one would expect.
It has a cliffhanging ending and many points were left
unanswered. Tami Hoag ended the book rather abruptly,
lending one to think there may be a sequel in the works.
I recommend Deeper Than the Dead. The last several
chapters could have been better tied together to put
some finality to the ending.
