Book Reviews of Definitely Dead (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 6)

Book Review: Definitely Disappointing
Summary: 3 Stars

I have enjoyed these book immensly but this one was a real disappointment. Dead Until Dark started the series and I would say was highly original in tone and execution - however, this book falls far short. Bill's twist is really out of left field and felt forced - I just didn't buy it - Ms. Harris would have been better off sending him on an extended vacation rather than ruin his character.

We did not see enough Eric - he's the funniest part of the series and is reduced to a couple of lines. The Queen is interesting but could have been developed more.

Quinn is quite boring - I don't understand why people like him - he's a flat character and the overuse of "babe" is grating.

The real problem with the book however is the choppiness and as one reviewer said Sookie channeling Velma and explaining the plot at the end a la Scoobie Doo. It's as if Ms. Harris wasn't given enough to time to flesh out characters and plot points in order to meet this books deadline.

Also, Fairies, shapeshifters, were-wolves oh my... We are verging on jumping the shark - how many more supernatural beings do we need to endure at the expense of a decent mystery or plot?

The series is a great ride and entertaining - I would recommend checking it out - just don't get the hardcover -wait for paperback.

Book Review: Alright!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I had the luck of getting my copy of Definately Dead autographed by Charlaine Harris at my local mystery book shop in Houston the other day. Her personal voice is as charming Sookie's Southern accent, and just as witty. I read this book in about 5 hours or so, because of the buildup. It's so easy to slip back into Sookie's world after months passing between publications. I thought the first 100 pages or so were a breeze. Personally, I'm not crazy about an uberhero. I like a a balance of Sookie out of the thick of "vampire and pack politics" too. Proportion is a good thing when you are writing about a girl who seems like she's got men like puppets on strings in one book, then reality hits and the clouds collect round her perky blond head. Remember--she is single, really cute and only 25 or 26. The "whiny factor" mentioned by another reviewer is realistic for this character. Her life has totally changed in the last year and she can't get no satisfaction. Except for Quinn, who she's not sure if she can trust.
Plots I was glad wrapped up- Bill, the Pelts, Cal what's-his-name and some of the Eric drama.
Faetures I predict we will see more of in the next book- tension Sam and his potential new werefox, hot lovin with Quinn (but he's so edgy, like a ...cat), and Eric ratcheting up the sexual conflict with his Machiavellian (sp)scheming. Fairy blood alone does not explain his yen for the exotic Sookie.

While I wait, I look ahead to Gravesight's sequel. It's coming out in Novemeber. When asked how she comes up with her plots and characters, Charlaine smiled widely and answered matter-of-factly,"I'm just creepy." Thank the lucky stars!Harper Connelly is a totally different flavor, but just as satisfying.

Book Review: paperback junkie
Summary: 5 Stars

I was dissapointed with, Dead as a doornail, but very much enjoyed Definitely Dead. I liked Quinn and Sophie (the vampire queen), and I was so glad to see Sookie tell Bill where to stick it. Let's face it as loyal boyfriends go he is a snake. Of course I would always like to see more Eric and Pam.

Book Review: good addition to the series!
Summary: 4 Stars

I really enjoyed the book but I do wish that it wasn't so short (it seemed short & choppy) and obviously one in a long series. I don't mind the long series, but I do wish that there wasn't quite so much foreshaddowing of things to come and so long to wait between books.

There are a lot of situations tied up in this story, Bill being one of them. The Bill situation surprised me initially, but upon thinking about it, does explain a lot about how he treated Stookie.

Warning about whining - Stookie does spend a good deal of the book upset. With the situations she was in it was understandable but there was a bit too much whining in general for my taste.

I really wonder how Jason is going to feel about Quinn.

But despite the choppiness and the whining, it was a good read. Definitely a good way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Book Review: Better the second time
Summary: 4 Stars

When I first got the book I rushed through it, sort of like a book feeding frenzy, just to see who Sookie would end up dating. When I finished it (8 hours later) I was disgruntled with the ending, because I felt like there were too many loose ends, and I felt like Sookie was too grumpy for me to enjoy her exploits. I am a big fan of the series, but this book fell a little flat for me at first. Now that I'm through with the second read, I like it better. Sookie is always coping with a steep learning curve, whether with her own powers or the supernatural world surrounding her. This book deals with her applying some of her tried and true lessons, which means she's not jumping into bed with Quinn or making a move on her various ex's. She's grumpy like any "real" person would be trying to cope with these crazy situations. Quinn's use of the "babe" word was a turn-off for me (as with some other reviewers), but I like his independent character and that he's refreshingly devoid of politics so far. I'm looking forward to "My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding" to see what wackiness happens at the Bellefleurs' double wedding.
