Book Reviews of Desert Flower: The Extraordinary Journey Of A Desert NomadBook Review: True life in Africa Summary: 5 StarsEver wondered how life is in Africa? This is the true book to read. It's one thing to have lived a life there and another to just observe, and the author has lived there.
Book Review: Funny, moving, inspirational! Summary: 5 StarsDesert Flower is the powerful story of the life of Somali supermodel Waris Dirie, who is now a UN spokesperson campaigning against female genital mutilation.
It starts from her very humble, but happy beginnings tending sheep and goats, her horrific circumcision at age 5, her running away from home to escape an arranged marriage to a geriatric at age 12, through to her getting to London and stumbling into modeling quite by accident.
Along the way, there were lots of events and signs in her life to tell her there was a bigger purpose to her life. Like her being spared from a lion in the desert.
There is also lots of fun and humour; Her naiveté on seeing modern everyday utilities, her bumping into Iman and a young unknown insecure Naomi Campbell, her being a Donna Summer fan and flubbing her lines on the TV show Soul Train.
Her finding love, the birth of her precious son, and her eventual reunion with her mother.
Oh, there are loads of stunning photos too, she is a supermodel after all.
Through all the pain and hardship in her life, she came through strong and not bitter against those who mistreated her. A real class act and an inspiration.
Desert Flower is a stunning and moving story which everyone should read.
Book Review: Extraordinary Indeed!! Summary: 4 StarsFirst of all, I want to say that this story was amazing, honest and from the heart. Waris explains her journey from her nomadic life in Somalia to London, where she becomes a fashion model.
It is so hard to believe that there are places in the world that still exist with no electricity, running water, doctors, pharmacies etc. Waris has shone a light on an area that not many people are aware of, and I congratulate her for that.
She has also discussed the issue of FGM, (female genital mutilation) which must have been hard, as she went through it herself. But by doing that, I'm sure that now there are more educated people about this topic, which will help to if not completely, partially wipe this "epidemic" out of existance.
This book was informative and touching to read, and I suggest anyone really to take a look at it, it will open your eyes to another world on our planet. You might also want to read her other book, "Desert Dawn", which is about her journey back to Somailia to see her parents.
Book Review: Beauty IS more than skin deep for this remarkable woman! Summary: 5 StarsMs. Waris Dirie's story, from her humble beginnings in Somalia to the glitzy world of high fashion would be fascinating even if it weren't for the dreadful tragedies she has endured. If ever a woman took pain and turned it to a positive, it's this woman. By courageously overcoming cultural conditioning to tell the story of her horrific mutilation, she moves the world one step closer to a day when other little girls won't have to endure this torture. Her physical beauty is stunning, her courage unmatched, and her legacy will endure long after her modeling career is over. Thank you, Ms. Dirie, and God bless you.
Book Review: POWERFUL Summary: 5 StarsThis book gives the reader a unique firsthand account of the terrible practice of Female Genital Mutilation, which is a common practice in many African countries and is found even in the USA. Reading about her misery and suffering during and after the procedure was performed on her, reveals to the world the horrors a girl goes through. She also reveals the longlasting effects is has had on her life and how she became a spokesperson against the practice for the UN. This is one of the most powerful social statements that I have ever read. Every person interested in human rights should put this book at the top of their must-read list.
