Book Reviews of Destiny's CowboyBook Review: Interracial Reader Summary: 1 Stars
This novel was very disappointing. It started off w/ good potential, but fizzled out quickly. The storyline was not well developed, and the author left too much for the reader to infer. When I read a novel, I want it to be explicit. It was an extremely short novel; however, I didn't even read the last page. It was a real struggle to get to the end of the book. Don't take my word about it--read it for yourself--you might like it. BUT try to borrow it because it is not worth wasting your money.
Book Review: Not done yet!!! Summary: 1 Stars
While this book has good bones; possible interesting characeters and great background, it is missing alot. It's like reading an intro to a story or the basic rough draft that is going to be added to.This book is about 200 pages short of being a finshed work considering the price charged for purchase.
Book Review: The pace was OFF!! Summary: 2 Stars
Destiny's Cowboy is the freshman effort of author Kendra Mei Chailyn.
In her defense I have to say it was an admirable attempt to tell a love story.
The problem is with the pacing and the number of pages given to the telling of the story.
Gage Everette has returned home, a home he left as soon as he could to get away from his abusive, debauched father, his mother having passed away earlier.
Gage retuns to Montana to settle his father's estate having left his life as a football player behind.
Why he does this is never questioned, though he did not have to. Let's run with his sense of responsibility.
While he is home he hears someone at his door, he opens it to find a half-dead woman, Jasmin Cole on his steps. He takes her in and finds her a bed while drifting in and out of her fugue Jasmin tells him she has a daughter and she is out there somewhere. Gage goes out and find Kleo and offers mother and daughter a safe place to stay.
We find out the reason they were out in the dark was because Jasmin has found her spine and takes Kleo to run from her drunkard abusing husband.
That is the set up of the story.
Now we have all the pieces to make for a taut, tensely written story: the damsel in distress, the child to unfreeze the hero's heart and a menacing villian for the hero to banish before he can claim his prize.
And this could have been that story except the author wasn't able enough with her words; the editor never showed up and the publishing house ran out of funds!
As you read the story you realize that things that should have taken weeks, even months are happening in days: Jasmin is coming on to Gage gangbusters! I know they found each other attractive, but if I am worried that my hell spawn husband is just over the horizon I am not about to jump into anyone else's bed just yet.
Gage hates his father, we establish that quickly, but you are never sure why he is at the ranch then. He has no reason to take on his father's debt.
There are the secondary characters: Voodoo, Gage's friend from HS. and John her love interest from the same time (we won't talk about the nanny/cook/housekeeper as she is more like a tertiary character and truly you get the picture).
These characters served no purpose, they didn't help the story move and sorting through Voodoo's accent was maddening. An accent that at one point we are told was thick when they first met, but lessened over time, only to be told again that it was still thick decades later.
Those are the kinds of inconsistency an editor should have caught.
But again, the biggest drag for this novel was the pacing. It was not consistent. There were conversations, feelings and arguements that made no sense. Were pages in the book stuck together? Why did these happen so quickly? Maybe if one of the characters were facing imminent death it would make sense, as it did it ruined a good story.
I hope with time and more experience Ms. Chailyn will try again and find her voice and her audience.
I will be cheering her on all the way. In this instance I would suggest we all set up a trading ring for this book.
