Book Reviews of Devil May Care (The New James Bond Novel )

Book Review: Bond is back
Summary: 4 Stars

Mr. Faulks definitely follows the form and style of Ian Fleming. He picks up mid cold war. It's quite a jump back from John Gardner and Raymond Benson, but entertaining nonetheless.

The descriptions of the psychy of our favorite secret agent are detailed and vivid. Though, how many wildy rich psychotic despots can there be in world? After all, James Bonds has eliminated most of them with his trusty Walther PPK.

Book Review: Bond is back in style!
Summary: 4 Stars

Like the much needed "relaunch" of James Bond films, Devil May Care brings the spy back to his roots. While I enjoyed the first few Raymond Benson novels, it was clear by the end that the author's interest was elsehwere. His final original novel, The Man With the Red Tatoo, was so poorly written that I didn't even finish it. So it was with some hesitation that I picked up Devil May Care. But I'm happy to say that this is a Bond story the way it should be--dramatic without being over the top and very tightly paced. There is never a dull moment, and even the author's injections of culture and history are welcome as a respite from the great action. I truly hope we see more 007 stories from Sebastian Faulks.

Book Review: Bond, James Bond!
Summary: 5 Stars

No spoilers! We just finished read Devil May Care, the new James Bond novel by Sebastian Faulks, writing as Ian Fleming. The novel was commissioned by the Fleming Estate for the 100th Birthday Anniversary of Sir Ian Fleming.

It takes place back in the 60s Cold War, right after the Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace movies. It reads like Ian Fleming and is quite enjoyable, short of our inability to translate the French and knowing nothing of tennis! Any true Bond fan should read this novel -- before the screen play comes out!

Book Review: Bond. James Bond.
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a new novel featuring 007- and the third author to write a Bond novel since Fleming passed away.

In some ways I would say this was an astonishingly good emulation of the originals. The author quite understood whose style he was emulating, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone told me he'd written this one with a stack of the Fleming Bond novels cracked open with sentences diagrammed and plot elements carefully analyzed on every page.

On the other hand, though, Mr. Faulks' attention to the stylistic and plot specifics of the earlier Bond novels has created one problem: this one wouldn't translate forward of the late 60s at all easily, as the plot revolves around situations present in that era, which no longer exist in our world. The world of Fleming's Bond is very specific to the era of their publication- the Cold War was unfolding in a very particular way based on the geopolitics of the time.

Overall, though, I found this book a fun read, and a more than fitting 100th birthday present for Mr. Fleming.

Book Review: Bond...Stirred Not Shaken
Summary: 4 Stars

Devil May Care was a good read all things considered. It could never be confused with a "real" Ian Fleming book, but I enjoyed it. I say "stirred not shaken" because Faulks tries to stick to Fleming's style, but falls short (there's an absurd tennis match for example). I am glad I found the book at my local Library and did not have to pay the hardcover price for it! Wait for the paperback. If Faulks were to write another Bond novel I would probably read it if I could get it at the Library.
