Book Review: Bring on the Bond...
Summary: 4 Stars

Having been a long-time James Bond fan, and one that continues to see the new movies as they're released, I wanted to give the new book from Sebastian Faulks a try. I expected it to be similar to the resurrected Bourne series by Eric Van Lustbader.

While, in my opinion, taking up a series, like Bond, and trying to rekindle it is a difficult thing. While Sebastian Faulks isn't Ian Fleming, he does a decent job or portraying the Bond character. Sebastian Faulks, I think, does a decent job of retaining the overall "Bond" feeling throughout the book, but doesn't quite do it with the nitty gritty details--primarily those that only Ian Fleming could accomplish.

Still, all that being said, I enjoyed the book. It was a quick read, and definitely a page turner. I throughly enjoyed it, and would easily consider reading another of Sebastian Faulks' Bond books. With Daniel Craig resurrecting the Bond movie series, Mr Faulks may have jumped into the game at just the right time.

Book Review: Close enough for government work...
Summary: 4 Stars

For all the negative reviewers, let's take a deep breath. Perhaps you've not read a Fleming in recent years, but Sir Ian was not exactly Dostoevsky - consistently serviceable story-telling to fuel our fantasies. Faulks does a more than respectable job and the element of parody was quite in keeping with Fleming's last few Bond novels wherein he sustained the formula expected by his loyal fans and required by his spending habits. Give "Casino Royale" another read as I recently did, and Faulks comes off pretty well. Shake up a couple of Vesper Lynds, and he reads just fine.

Book Review: Close, but no cigar
Summary: 4 Stars

Faulks has the time frame down well - the smoking, the attitudes towards sex, the weapons, etc., but he lacks the finesse of Fleming.

He is dead on with his decription of Tehran - from the mountains to the "jubs" - but, somehow the plot never really seems to excite the reader the way the old Bond novels did.

It was nice to have this one additional Bond novel - but we don't need any more from Faulks.

Book Review: Devil May Care
Summary: 3 Stars

I didn't think this book had the same level of intrigue as previous Bond stories. 007 adventures by post-Fleming authors Gardner and Bensen provided more detailed action sequences that increased the overall excitement of the read in my opinion. I did like the return to the Cold War period and references to previous Bond missions.
