Book Review: 007 Never Dies
Summary: 4 Stars
I was very familiar with the writings of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels (having read Dr. No, From Russia with Love, On her Majesty's Secret Service and Casino Royale), so I was interested in reading this book. At the time of the book's release, I was hesitant to try it, however recently I picked it up and tried it. I was pleasantly surprised. Sebastian Faulks with a wonderful job capturing the style of Fleming. I found Bond to be a bit more light-hearted than normal. In the original Fleming novels, Bond is rough around the edges, and rather a tough guy. This Bond is still willing to kill in the cold blood, however he is a much more appealing person. Also the setting was very new, and different for Bond. I also truly enjoyed the book's villain, Dr. Julius Gorner and his monkey hand. Gorner is a villain you love to hate. One of the part's of the book I didn't care for though was the tennis match between Bond and Gorner. It is obviously a recreation of the golf game between Bond and Goldfinger, but once you're past this point the book isn't that bad. My only complaint is that this novel is rather long, and towards the end it drags a bit. Perhaps my favorite sequence in the novel is the fight between Bond and Gorner, and Gorner's death.
Devil May Care proves that the legacy of James Bond,007 can never die.
