Book Reviews of Dictionary of Chinese Symbols: Hidden Symbols in Chinese Life and Thought (Routledge Dictionaries)

Book Review: Well researched?
Summary: 1 Stars

This book may be "well researched" but the only Chinese character on the cover is upside down!

Book Review: A gem.
Summary: 5 Stars

You can't tell a book by its cover. That saying is very fitting here. Wolfram Eberhard was one of the early greats of China scholarship (he died in 1989). The only one who can be blamed of the mistake (up and down symbol) on the cover is the publisher. If you look at the fish in the cover, you can see that the whole thing is upside down.

The book itself is a real gem. Topics are always given in their Chinese character(s) (using the traditional, not simplified forms), and each entry explains why the ideas behind the symbol are important. The approach is primarily historical, and there are no details (stroke order etc). The book gives you a good understanding of Chinese culture.
