Book Reviews of Dirt on My Shirt

Book Review: Grandson
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this book for my grandson after seeing Jeff Foxworthy interviewed. This has fast become my grandsons favorite book. My son tells me that he is reading it to him every day. Written with humor and at a level most children would love.

Book Review: Great Illustrations Accompany Poetry by Jeff Foxworthy
Summary: 4 Stars

As a teenager in the 90s I listened to many a standup comedian and Jeff Foxworthy's albums were some of my favourites. So upon seeing a picture book with his name on the cover, flipping it over and seeing that it is indeed the very same Jeff Foxworthy from the picture who used to tell the world "You Might be a Redneck if...." amongst many other hilarious comedy routines, I just had to grab a copy.

Had no idea really what to expect but basic humourous poetry definitly hadn't even entered my mind. As a huge fan of Foxworthy I'd like to have said they are masterpieces but to be honest they are hit and miss. In the Night about a kid sneaking out of bed, Bumblebee Breakfast about why you shuoldn't eat doughnuts that fall on the ground and Pretend about a kid's fantasy adventures in his/her bed are really, really good. Some are pretty average though such as Uncle Keith and Choices seem to contain sentences that don't flow with the rest of the poem but just there as he couldn't come up with anything else that rymed. Then there's some poems such as Granddaddy about a child who wiggles in the grandfathers lap as his grandfather tickles him are probably about something innocent but come across a little bit creepy.

Then there's Making Friends about a bragging boy where after being scared by ghost stories they had to sleep with his friend's sister Laurie. So Foxworthy puts in a bit of humour for adults with that one that will just go over the heads of kids but leave you thinking, there's the Foxworthy humour I was looking for.

What is sensational is the illustrations by Steve Bjorkman, they are very basic and cartoony in style and just work really well with the poems. What's good too is that with some poems the illustrations are a boy, others it is a girl meaning the book will appeal to be genders.

Dirt on My Shirt is no literary masterpiece but it is entertaining. Fans of standup comedian's doing picture books might want to check out Halloween (Collector's Edition with CD) by Jerry Seinfeld. Other good kids picture books where you will be suprised by an author writing outside of their usual genre are - There's a Hair in My Dirt! A Worm's Story by Gary Larson (guy who did The Far Side comics) and Santa's Twin by Dean Koontz.

Foxworthy's also got another picture book of poems called Silly Street.

Book Review: Great Kid Book
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw that Jeff Foxworthy had a kids book and I was a little surprised. I looked it up on Amazon and saw the description and purchased it. The book came and my 4yr old really loved the title and when we read the poems it liked it even more. We have to read at least a couple of poems each night before bed.

Book Review: Great book!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is everything you need in a childrens book. It's silly, funny, and the poems are not too long. Really great for children and adults.

Book Review: It's a collection of poems for kids. Not classic Foxworthy stuff
Summary: 3 Stars

I was hoping that this book would bring more chuckles than it does. Coming from Jeff Foxworthy one would have that expectation. It's not a book of humorous things that kids do, well, not in the laugh out loud sense, but is a collection of cute poems for kids.
I still enjoyed the book, but expected more laughs.
