Book Review: Niccolo Machiavelli at his best

This book, unlike 'The Prince', demonstrates Machiavelli's true republican theories. His subject matter pertains to be a dicussion around Livy's 'History of Rome' but it is rather a political treatise with the added flare of sociological analysis. Anyone wishing to understand the core of Machiavelli's political and social theory, or simply wishing to gain an insight into different approaches to politics, cannot do better than buy this book. As a point of comparison between Machiavelli's other works, it is interesting to read this alongside 'The Prince' because they offer slight points of tension between Machiavelli's theory and what he was forced to practice in order to win back political favour in his own lifetime. Thought provoking and controversial in its own right, this book offers to the modern reader an insight not only into Ancient Rome, but also into the political and social turmoil of Machiavelli's Florence. 'Discourses on Livy' offers the true doctrine of Machiavellism, and it is a must for all those interested in politics, sociology, or history.
