Respect for Rommel can only increase after reading Charles Marshall's book. The author tells Rommel's story in a straightforward, factual style, which lets Rommel's own words provide the reality as it unfolded for him. Much of the book uses transcripts from Rommel's diary and letters to his wife and tracks his increasing frustration with Hitler's empty promises for troops and supplies. The utter professionalism of Rommel as a soldier and military strategist shine through consistently. Only Rommel's love for his country made him overcome his obedience to Hitler and eventually allowed him to understand the full horror. The book describes how Rommel died as he lived - the ultimate professional soldier.
