Book Review: 'Trickery Somewhere'
Summary: 5 Stars
C.J. Sansom's 'Dissolution' attracted my attention at a used book store in Connecticut several weeks ago, with (at least on my edition) a cover depicting monks...one of my favorite subjects to read about.....and what a read it was.
Investigator Matthew Shardlake is summoned, in 1537, by Lord Thomas Cromwell to investigate the death of a commissioner at a Benedictine monastery that Cromwell is considering for closure due to 'unsavory' and scandalous papist activities within the walls.
Matthew takes the commission, along with his hot-headed yet eager apprentice, Mark Poer, and sets off to find the truth behind the decapitation of his predecessor....amidst treachery, secret lusts, betrayals, etc.,...and manage to keep his own head about him, literally and figuratively.
Inviting comparisons to Umberto Eco's masterful 'The Name of the Rose', I equate this novel as being its equal in entertainment and mystery, though not as 'scholarly' as the Eco offering. However, don't let that deter you....author C.J. Sansom has delivered a crackling good mystery, full of menacing shadows, secret passages, dangerous liaisons, and murder most foul.
This first 'Matthew Shardlake' novel has spawned three sequels thus far, and I for one am VERY excited to continue along with Matthew Shardlake in his further adventures.
HIGHLY recommended.
