I've been playing through the examples in this book, and overall, I think this book is a solid effort at djembe instruction. I'm also using it to introduce my Mom to the djembe, and its clear approach has been very helpful.
The nice descriptions and pictures of fundamental djembe technique were major pluses. Seeing exactly how different hits look helped me get a more consistent tone. Also, the book is litterally packed with excercises. They follow different themes, which has helped me boost my creativity with the instrument as I play different variations. Quite simply, it's hard to get into a rut with this book.
The book doesn't go into a great amount of detail about the West African cultural music that the djembe generally accompanies, nor does it give transcriptions of "traditional" beats that accompany different celebrations. If you want to work on purely learning authentic African rhythms, I would suggest checking out Thione Diop's instructional DVD. If you need a creative and technical boost, however, this book is a great choice.
