Book Review: Award Winning Book for Young Adults - Dogsong

Some people are not enamored of modern life. It just doesn't speak to their souls. Russell Susskit is one of these people. And nothing modern in his Alaskan village appeals to him. He doesn't like the cigarettes that cause his father to cough, nor the loud snow mobiles.
Thus, it's not surprising that he finds himself in the company of Oogruk, a village elder who still remembers the old ways. From the old man, Russell gains not only information and the villages only sled-team, but a quest that takes him to the far, far north.
This book won several awards and honors, and it is not hard to see why. It had all of Paulsen's trademark elements -- superb writing and accurate facts. In the later case, Paulsen draws on his own experience with dog-sleds. (He ran two Iditarods.)
That said, there are some people who aren't going to appreciate this book. First there are some mystic elements that younger readers might not be able to relate to. Then there are the realistic parts that are going to make the immature cringe. For example, Oogruk eats animal eyes. [Guess what, people do that.] For another, there's a girl who has a miscarriage after she tries to kill herself after she is made to feel ashamed by the religious converts in her village.
Personally, it just wasn't my favorite Paulsen story. I thought the aside with the girl was somehow out of place. But overall, worth reading.
