Book Review: A Regional Novel of Civilization v. Barbarism in Venezuela

Gallego's novel is a typical regional novel depicting the feeling of civilization versus barbarism in turn of the century South America. It is the story of Santos Luzardo, a city dweller who returns to his land in the wilderness to bring it up to date. He encounters Dona Barbara the embodiment of everything old and backwards. He also meets her daughter Marisela who has just about brought herself up and is therefore neither civilized nor "barbaric". He falls in love with her much to the annoyance of her mother Barbara who is keen on Santos herself. It is an intriguing novel outlining the problems in defining who or what is civilized or barbaric. The ending is also a page turner with a final note of hope and perhaps happiness.
