Book Review: Best Book on Holistic Alternatives for Prostate Cancer

I can highly recommend this book after extensive reading on prostate cancer. Dr. Katz is the Director of "Holistic" Urology at Columbia University, where Dr. Katz employs a Naturopathic doctor on his staff. (This is rare, and reflects a desire to do what is in the best interest of his prostate cancer patients, not maximize revenues from prostate surgery.) In October 2010 I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer (Gleason 3/4 = 7, with only 5%-10% grade 4 cancer). I have been told from very, very reputable doctors that I have a 95% cure rate (either surgery or radiation). HOWEVER, I would like to avoid both and have been actively pursing an "alternative" path that hopefully will lead to my body healing itself by eliminating what is feeding my cancer. I changed my diet quite a bit, and went from 235 pounds to under 200 pounds in 60 days. (See below.) I discovered Dr. Katz's team at Columbia have done extensive testing on Zyflamend for prostate cancer, with "results (that) have been striking." (I have no affiliation with Dr. Katz or New Chapter.) Chapter 6 in Dr, Katz's book is titled, "Chemoprevention and Holistic Treatments for Prostate Cancer" and is worth its weight in gold. Chapter 7 is titled Nutrition --Diet, Whole Foods and Supplements" and is also worth its weight in gold. He also devotes a chapter on "Lifestyle Stress and Prostate Health," which is informative and helpful. If you read Dr. Katz's guide to Prostate Heath," you will get a fresh and very informed perspective from a top-rate urology surgeon who has the integrity to share all he knows about how to avoid surgery or radiation. (Yes, he does recommend surgery over radiation for men who need to make that choice, but that is an understandable bias. One would assume if Dr. Katz was a radiation oncologist, he would recommend that form a treatment. Dr. Katz is also pioneering advancements in cryotherapy, the freezing of the prostate.)
If you start with Dr. Katz's book, you will likely know 85% - 90% of the most helpful information you will learn from all the other sources of information out there, since you will learn about potentially viable holistic therapy alternatives. Regarding choosing between surgery or radiation, that is personal choice. RC Cancer Centers in Atlanta (Decatur, GA) provides a free informative 56 page booklet titled, "Questions & Answers About Curing Prostate Cancer." I did purchase a John Hopkins publication, "Choosing the Right Treatment for Your Prostate Cancer." It is very solid, informative and helpful (though a bit pricey at $50). There should be something better, but if you were to start with the RC Cancer Center and John Hopkins paper you would be saving yourself a lot of time.
[MY DIETARY CHANGES: I began drinking 100 - 124 ounces of purified (ionized) water a day. I began starving myself of sugar and carbohydrates (which turn to sugar), eating primarily organic vegetables (only granny smith apples) along with organic free range chicken (and some organic free range beef) and cold water fish (salmon, halibut, mahi mahi), as well as eating a lot of extra virgin olive oil. I lost 35 pounds in 2 months. I have been drinking ionized water (bought a Life Ionizer), which creates negative ions that attach to free radicals. (See Maximized Living.com, the Paleo Diet, or mercola.com). My PSA did drop from 3.7 to 3.3, but more time is needed to see if this trend will continue. I have been taking New Chapter Prostate 5LX pills, which Dr. Katz is highly in favor. I will begin taking many other herbs and supplements Dr. Katz discusses (along with favorable results he has observed in prior studies), including New Chapter's Zyflamend, which I took a free sample two weeks ago in lieu of ibuprofen and it cured a headache.]
