Book Review: Very good, very interesting

I've now read three books of Mr. Pelecanos. This is the first book of his that I've read that doesn't have a Greek protagonist, and it's also the first one that doesn't involve a restaurant. I wondered how this would go, and now I know: it went quite well, and I enjoyed the book without these things.
Lorenzo Brown is an employee of the Humane Society, protecting Washington D.C.'s dog population, mostly. He's also an ex-con, a drug dealer who went to prison rather than snitch on his childhood friend. Now that he's out, working to protect dogs rather than sell drugs, he has to regularly report to his parole officer, a woman named Rachel Lopez. Rachel's got issues of her own (she drinks too much, and has a lot of anonymous, semi-dangerous sex) and she's trying to ride herd on a rough group of offenders, Lorenzo among them. When you add into this mix a bunch of other drug dealers, some dogfighting fanatics, and at least one psychotic killer, things get out of hand.
This is one very good book, and by now I'm a confirmed George Pelecanos fan. I'm going to be looking for his other books.
