Book Review: A genuine, intelligent book on the art of manga!
Summary: 5 Stars
As along term fan, and short term dabbler in the art of Manga, I cannot praise this book highly enough. The majority of books I had encountered, up to this point, had been little more than "draw by numbers" to make a cool robot or busty girl pamphlets, or at best, coffee table enhancers showcasing the artwork of various ubercool artists (both inspiring and intimidating for a beginner!).
Lewis's book, however, takes an entirely different approach. The book delves deeply into the grass roots of the subject dealing with the historical origins of the artform itself, and the way certain conventions and narrative devices have evolved through the years, proving that Manga is a lot more than just Marvel with over sized eyes, but is a distinct artform featuring a whole unique language and symbology of its own.
Although straightforward, clear and concise in it's approach, this book will not let you off easily. If all that you are seeking is how to quickly learn to produce a picture of a busty girl or a cool robot then this book is probably NOT the one for you.
In a Nutshell Draw Manga is a book that is like the very best teachers, it expects a lot of you. It doesn't expect innate talent necessarily, indeed the author asserts that elitism in this regard should be ignored and that anyone can learn to draw if they put in the effort, similarly if you are lucky enough to be 'gifted' this is not sufficient in itself. And that is what this book boils down to. Effort and encouragement and imagination. Yes it is challenging but not daunting, and that is why I love it; because it expects me to push myself and yet is with me all the way, making me laugh and cheering me on.
