Book Reviews of Dream SnowBook Review: Attention getter Summary: 5 Stars
As a mother and a preschool teacher, I can say that I really enjoyed this book. The simplicity of it keeps the attention of the children. They love to repeat the lines with me as I am reading. They also like taking turns pressing the button to hear the music. This is truly another master piece by Carle.
Book Review: Delightful! Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this book for my 20 month old granddaughter. We both love it! The only reason I didn't give it a five star rating is because I am not quite sure the "mystical tinkling" at the end is working exactly right. It is a little short which led me to believe it might be defective. The tinkling is delightful--could just be a little longer.
Book Review: Disappointing Summary: 3 Stars
Pros:
- illustrations are adorable.
- the gimmick of having clear pages covering characters with "a blanket of snow" was kind of cute
- rounds out a collection of Eric Carle, if you're super into that guy
- SPOILER ALERT there's a button that plays music at the end
- does some counting (up to 5 - woohoo [note the sarcasm])
Cons:
- kinda short
- repetitive, and not in a cute kids' book kinda way, more in an annoying "I'm phoning it in" way
- it's a Christmas book so you don't really want to read it any other time of year
- music that plays at the end is super tinny and you can barely make out the song
- the story overall just doesn't feel like it goes anywhere
My daughter is only 7.5 months old, so she didn't really care, but I read this to her after she got it as a Christmas present. It kinda... sucked. The illustrations are up to par with previous works, but the story was totally a cheapo move - because people will buy any Christmas book, really, especially if it's with an author they already know. It didn't really make any sense. And it just ended without any real conclusion or anything, I guess because the author was depending on the stupid little music button to distract us.
This is kind of an insult to The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which I remember wanting to read over and over again when I was in preschool.
Book Review: Dram Snow by Eric Carle Summary: 3 Stars
Although I liked this book (which I purchased for my grandkids), it is not one of my favorite Eric Carle books. It plays music at the end of the story, but it is very short and not very loud. I did like the see-through pages throughout the book.
Book Review: Dream Snow Summary: 5 Stars
Toy book--joy book, Carle hits a home-run again. Follow the farmer and his animals--named after numbers because he can count them on one hand, through a dream of snow falling on the barnyard. The reality of a snowfall intrudes on their lives and a hustle begins over something he has forgotten. Overlays complete the illusion of snow covering all it comes in contact with and our young audience uncovers each animal to ensure its well-being. A musical sound effect ending the story celebrates Christmas. Bright poster paint montage cut-outs fill the pages to create a warm and inviting texture to the story as it unfolds. The folk art is child-like yet filled with wonderful touches of details that overall create a satisfying balance. Children will come back to it again and again.
