Book Reviews of Dream SnowBook Review: Gorgeous illustrations, charming text Summary: 5 Stars
My 2-year-old daughter and I are huge fans of this book: it's a classic! Clearly, not an inexpensive book, but it's really quite special. It's got some neat tricks (the snow transparencies, the music button), but manages to not be gimmicky, probably because of the strength of the beautiful illustrations. Eric Carle is just amazing.
Book Review: Great Holiday Book Summary: 4 Stars
Eric Carle is on of my favorite children's authors. I love his colors and his simple, direct stories. My grandson loves him, too. Most people know him for The Very Hungry Caterpillar, but it's one of my least favorite books of his. I love the grand artsy ones, and Dream Snow fits that category perfectly.
Book Review: Great book for reading readiness... Summary: 5 Stars
This book lets you teach 49 vowel-spellings with 282 vocabulary words.
Book Review: Kids will like it, but I think it's rather lackluster Summary: 3 Stars
This book feels like it was created by someone who wanted to use "cool" features(the clear plastic sheets of "snow" that cover the characters, and the musical aspect at the end) and then wrote a story around it.
If it weren't for the above, this book would get 1 star. The story line is weak & the ending is just awkward "and then he pushed the button". My 18 month old likes it, but only so I can push the button for her - which is hard to push for a little kid. But, I do not enjoy reading it to her.
Book Review: Not a huge Carle fan, but love this book Summary: 5 Stars
I find a lot of Eric Carle's books a bit humdrum, with the exception of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, so when my daughter was given this book for Christmas about five years ago, I thought it was all a bit gimmicky with its "tingle, tingle, tingle" noisy button at the end and plasticky, white-covered pages simulating snow.
But we read this thing over and over, and the rhythm of it was so gentle and the sounds of the book so hushed, that it was a metaphysical experience. In other words, I felt as though Carle was covering us with a white blanket of words. Ahh, the memories of the soft and slow pace bring back a smile.
Then the farmer suddenly realizes that he's forgotten something, and there's a flurry of activity (like a flurry of snow!!) as he rushes out to decorate the tree. Cap it all off with the "tingly" button, which gets pushed over and over and over and over, etc.
Anyway, the long and the short of all this is that I am buying a second copy for my family, having misplaced the original. I now have three other children who haven't been introduced to this lovely book, and I truly think your own children or grandchildren will find it a classic.
