Book Reviews of Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and InheritanceBook Review: Captivating Summary: 4 StarsI admired Senator Obama, but I wanted to know more about him. Now I can only hope that someone with his integrity, values, intellect, honesty, modesty and motivation can lead this country in the future. I really feel like I know "Barry" and hope I am fortunate enough to hear Senator Obama speak in the near future. The book has so many story lines 1) Growing up inter-racial, 2) Learning about his African family 3) The influence of grandparents 3) Becoming focused as a young adult after a confusing childhood 4) the life of a community organizer and much more! I was only sorry it ended when it did!
Book Review: Senator Barack Obama is the real deal! Summary: 5 StarsAs a Chicago resident, I am a big fan. This is our magnificent U.S. Senator from the great State of Illinois. And this web page says it all about what I think of this book and Senator Obama: http://www.billslater.com/who_is_barack_obama.htm
Read the book and check out his speeches. You will see why I am praying for this brilliant leader to be U.S. President someday. And may that day come sooner than later. God Bless Senator Obama and his Family!
Book Review: A beautifully crafted look at the future through a fascinating past. Summary: 5 StarsI loved this book. I would have liked it just for the subject matter. As a white man from the Midwest married to an Indonesian woman, with many races and religions in my family, I could identify with much of the subject matter as Barack takes us from Hawaii to Indonesia to Chicago to Kenya to Harvard. But what surprised me was the beauty and eloquence of his writing. Whether picturing the varied scenes of travels or the people and emotions in his memory, he crafts in our minds vivid mental pictures and brings forth gripping emotions in a way worthy of the best professional authors. Obama's description of his very complicated family history in Kenya, the memories and emotions, was especially touching. So much living, so much understanding, and he is only 50.
I found myself thinking that maybe Senator Obama was wasting his talents in the sterile, unlovely Senate. I know though that government is where we must bring about changes to move into a less compartmentalized world, and Senator Obama is well positioned to help with this difficult transition.
A great, must-read book for all faiths, races, and political affiliations.
Book Review: Exceptional! Educational! Emotional! What Obama is about! Summary: 5 Stars
I could not put this book down. Maybe it was because I am also in public service but something about that man's life was really intriguing. He was rich in culture (found culture), family and most of all, rich of thoughts and questions. Those questions he had are questions that many Americans have whether they're black or white and getting them answered by his experiences make it that much better.
Like the other readers, I would have like to read more about his experiences at Harvard and also how he got to be a US Senator but I'm sure there will be future books. I hope to see him as a presidential candidate in the future.
Book Review: A Great Book Summary: 5 StarsI thoroughly enjoyed this book. Extremely well written, plenty of visual descriptions and phenomenal metaphors. While a biography, the parts I found most meaningful to me were his visions of what his life in foreign lands meant, how his experiences in New York and Chicago influenced his thinking and how he treats all people with equal reverence. How unusual it is to have a man, who delivered such an inspiring address at the Democratic convention, whose actions mirror his words. I sincerely hope that he is given the opportunity to run for President some day.
