Book Reviews of Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and InheritanceBook Review: Dreams from My Father.... Summary: 3 StarsIn reading other reviewers' comments, I too feel as if the content of this memoir was different from what I had expected.
I too felt that Obama's mother and maternal grandparents were kind of left out in the cold, although they were the ones who raised, nurtured, and loved him.
On the other hand, the book is mostly devoted to his father - a man who abandoned Obama - and his fathers side of the family.
I thought Obama was half white and half black, but after reading this book, I believe he is only black.
Book Review: Obama Is A True Inspiration! Summary: 5 StarsII'm 23. While I respect politics as an important aspect of America, I had never before felt such respect for a politician until Obma spoke at the DNC. It was after that that I decided to read his book.
The man is amazing. The book is just as amazing. Here you get a glimpse into his early years. He is, as some reviewers before me said, eloquent and inspiring.
I politely ask any and all who enjoyed this book or Obama's speech to also read "Prose From A Grandson To A Senior Fellow". You won't forget it or regret it.
Book Review: Human respect Summary: 4 StarsMr. Barack Obama story is the wonderful truths of all people. His perceptions are uncomfortable and loving at the same time. There are NO full blooded people here that are Americans including Indians and if we all just knew OUR OWN HISTORY we could help our nation. Obama's story is wonderful and all thinking people should read it and I am sure you will find yourself in it and all your family, because we can tell almost the same story.
Book Review: emily's choice Summary: 5 Starsthis is a great great read. i was impressed with the emotion which flowed throughout as i read. i would recommend this book to anyone who is openminded and a true lover of books. there are not that many books that are published like this one. it was definately the best book that i've read in a long time. i happened to get my hands on a precopy of a similiar book entitled "Why do I have to be your Nigger? - Theories in Niggativity.", and i remember telling my freshman english 101 class that when this book comes out, the black youth needs to read that book. Well, now i feel the same about "Dreams from My Father."
Book Review: Book is Good, but not what is advertised Summary: 3 StarsPlease, don't get me wrong, I loved this book. Obama's style and matter-of-fact realism is both refreshing and, at times, inspiring. The only reason why this book isn't 4+ stars, is because of the expectations that this book leads the reader to believe.
What I mean is that by reading the summary and back cover, the reader expects to experience a man torn between two cultures and belonging to neither. And while Obama does clearly illustrate his trepidation with associating himself with either culture, from the very beginning we learn that Obama, for all intents and purposes, held his black heritage in a different regard. He was not torn so much as distraught, growing up in a 'white' world unfamiliar with his black background. From reading this book, the reader does not get the sense of Obama'a sturggle with his white roots. The story is rather a search for answers on how to live as a black man in a white world. I believe that Obama missed the chance of opening the doors to a wholely different and misunerstood world of children of differing cultures. In this 'melting pot' that we call America, there is a constant struggle between race and ethnicity and Obama could have set himself up as an educator, a leader of those who had no home. Yet, from the beginning, Obama was at home in his black heritage, but he just was looking for the key.
