Book Reviews of Driven To Distraction : Recognizing and Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder from Childhood Through AdulthoodBook Review: I've read several books on ADD: this one outpaces the others Summary: 5 StarsAfter learning I had ADD, at age 45, I read all I could get my hands on. This book is more enjoyable, more informative, more true to life...less demeaning than anything else I have read. Dr. Hallowell uses lifes encounters as a method to help explain every facet of ADD that he describes. ADD is depicted as an adventure rather than one of lifes meladies we must endure. An easy read, well worth it for all family members.
Book Review: Must-read for people dealing with an ADDer who is in denial Summary: 5 StarsMy boyfriend and I met 12 years ago, but we started dating only two years ago. About two months into our relationship, I started experiencing some very exasperating moments with him and it dawned on me that he had ADD. I had only heard about ADD in the mid-80s, with all the big magazine cover stories. Ever since my observation, I have been begging him to get intervention, but he is in major denial. He has promised at times, forgotten at other times (typical) and been rebellious other times. He recently left me in my time of need (typical) for no good reason. With the loss of me, he is finally willing to get the inventory and listen to the doctor that will say that ADD causes relational dischord and treating it can save our relationship. WITHOUT THIS BOOK, I would feel a lot crazier and be a lot more depressed. This book is an easy read, with valuable charts and lists and covers just about EVERY thought I've had on the subject. My friend went out with someone who had ADD. She said she started thumbing through this book while her boyfriend was in the shower one day and she didn't stop reading until she finished it. So get this book, and see a counselor so the counselor can refer the ADDer to a good doctor for an inventory. Good luck.
Book Review: Awesome book. The best so far Summary: 5 StarsIt helps that the Dr.s have it but this book was the first step to me gaining my sanity. The character Jim was almost exactly me. I am now seeking treatment. Thank you!
Book Review: Driven to Distraction Summary: 5 Stars- I definitely am! Thank goodness for this book which finally helped put my daughter's behaviour into perspective. Unlike most other books that I have read on ADHD, this was excellently illustrated with real case studies. It really brought the infinite range of ADHD symptoms to life and includes chapters on all the comorbid disorders, plus adult methods of self-medication which often mask ADHD. An easy and educational read. Highly recommended!
Book Review: A REALLY COMPLETE Book on ADD!!! Summary: 5 StarsI was so glad to have found this book, written by a doctor, who himself, has ADD. Not only does he explain it really well, but he goes through all of the possible other diagnoses that can be confused, or mixed up with, ADD. He discusses all medical AND non-medical strategies to treat ADD, and winds up with the precise information to gather together before going to a doctor, to make your visit more productive. The writing style is comfortable, and easy to read, with many true-life examples of various people. I have a daughter who I am now sure has ADD, and NOW I finally know how to go about helping her! If you, or anyone in your family, has ADD, or even SUSPECT that they do, this is DEFINITELY the book for you. I cannot imagine that there is any better, or more complete, book out there on this problem.
