Book Reviews of Duma Key: A Novel

Book Review: King still knows how to scare.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an author who speaks directly to me.
.
It is a rare writer that uses phraseology, words, and references that could have come out of my own mouth, or the mouths of the people closest to me. When an author speaks the same language as the reader, there is a greater likelihood of direct connection so the images and thoughts are directly placed into the mind of the reader.
.
King does it again.

Book Review: Overall Good Story Telling...
Summary: 4 Stars

I enjoyed the characters and events in this book like many of SK's previous books. The actual "suspense" elements came only near the end though. Usually, I find several "hot spots" in the middle to shake me up and keep me engaged, but this book has no such spots. But like i said, the story and the characters jump out at you like in most of his novels, and to that end, it's a success in my mind. I would recommend this to other fans of King, but it's honestly probably a better read to someone like me, who hasn't read very many of his "older" works, but mostly his newest releases. Although i must admit, my time with such older novels as "Rose Madder" were more enjoyable.

Book Review: Stephen King has outdone himself!
Summary: 5 Stars

To say that this book is awesome would be an understatement. I read this book in 6 days flat and it's a little over 600 pages - I never do that, but I couldn't put it down. I actually cared about the characters and felt their struggles. I felt sadness, fear and even happiness that I've never felt reading a novel. In my opinion this is the best Stephen King book, ever! I loved everything about it, even the Afterthoughts. I am always amazed at King's writing style and the way he can capture such important moments in the characters' lives. I even felt sad when I finished it even though while reading it I couldn't wait to get to the ending to see what happened.

As an afterthought of my own, I thought it was very "Lost-like" for lack of a better phrase. Not that this novel copies Lost in any way, but it has the same sense of mystery that Lost has and any Lost fan would definitely appreciate it.

This book is scary, funny, sorrowful and just wonderful all the way around! I can't imagine what to read next!

Book Review: Back in the saddle - Terrific Read
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been harsh with some of Stephen King's previous works (Cell, Lisey's Story)...well, this book makes up for whatever I didn't care for in the previous two (and I've read every King book written/pub'd).

What has made his prose so compelling to me was the way it has made me laugh and get to be friends with one or some of the characters (which I didn't find in Cell, Lisey). Wireman and Freemantle are the best characters to come to me in word in some time from any author. Being an artist myself, I suppose it's easier to see many of the scenes Edgar is in. I loved it. I can't say enough about it. Just a great, fun, laughing read with just a touch of sinister and lots of real life.

I applaud you Mr. King.

Book Review: Duma Key
Summary: 4 Stars

I have to say...everytime Stephen King writes a new book I run out to buy it on the first day. Then I read through it in a manner of days and am always left waiting for the next book.

Some people will argue that King has lost his edge. Whatever it was that made him popular is now dwindling and, though he tries, he can't get it back. I disagree and think that King is reaching a level of maturity to his writing.

The new style may put off a few readers, but the avid fans will look at this book as a breath of fresh air. Many people have come to trust King to deliver an entertaining book, and Duma Key is no exception.
The characters are honest, if not each damaged in their own way, and the scenery is detailed and warm. The story moves along at a modest pace that invites the reader to be sucked in and experience Duma Key.

Even though the story loosely parallels a few other works (It and Desperation both find the main characters battling some great evil)it is a refreshing change from most modern fiction. King is still the master.
