Book Reviews of Duma Key: A NovelBook Review: A spooky King tale featuring an outstanding protagonist Summary: 4 Stars
Duma Key is a very enjoyable read, primarily because it features some of the best character development that Stephen King has ever produced. Told from the first-person perspective of protagonist Edgar Freemantle, the story propelled me along at a good clip. Edgar is a fine example of a multi-layered, non-generic character in fiction, and the manner in which he tells his story kept me interested throughout, and I was easily able to empathize with him, despite his many flaws.
As he embarked on his strange "midlife crisis" (that's one way to describe it), Edgar took me along for a memorable ride through settings that are not King's typical fare (Minnesota and Florida), and kept me interested in the mysteries and horrors, past and present, surrounding Duma Key. It was an enjoyable story, well written, and with a solid conclusion... a satisfying, spooky tale to read by the fire during your evenings.
Book Review: A true King masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
In reading these reviews, I am thrilled that everyone seems to feel the same way I do about Duma Key. The master is truly back. I am just half way through it, but I have slowed my reading to relish every word. It is so rich and deep and dark (makes me feel like eating Paula Deen's Velveeta Chocolate Fudge!) I have been reading Mr. King since Carrie and, like everyone, have those that are my favorites (read The Stand six times!) During the 1990's I continued to buy his books, but rarely finished one. I have felt that the books he has written in the 2000's are slowly coming back to the style that made us love him from the beginning, and with Duma Key, he is there, people, he is there! Mr. King, if you are reading this, thank you! And to any of you out there who loved Tommyknockers and Delores Claiborne and It and Needful Things, you are going to LOVE Duma Key. You don't need to know anything about it....just read it!
Book Review: A very nice book to read ! Summary: 4 Stars
You can say that Duma Key is not the best book of Mr King but I can tell you that it is a very nice book to read.
As a constant reader of my favourite author I can say that it is another good joyride you are going through.
The first half is the best. The ending is not good enough but....it's Stephen King. So enjoy it.
Book Review: AMAZING READ! Summary: 5 Stars
I went out and bought this book the first day it came out. I was not dissapointed. Once again, King manages to spin a tale of suspense, horror, and personal struggles that leaves you wanting more. If you are an artist-such as myself-this book will go even deeper for you. I read it at the same time I was preparing for my first art show, and boy, did it leave me a bit weak in the knees. King really manages to capture the thoughts and emotions that any artist goes through and I found myself identifying with the main character on many levels.
The one thing is that King has become darker since his accident. Understandable I think, as we tend to look at life differently when we are faced with life changing events in our lives. I think, for the most part, he has become better at his writing, and he has managed to touch on subjects that most people would fear to address. He makes you look at the darker side of yourself, while managing to always keep the light side in plain view.
Thank you King, for the amazing story. It couldnt have come at a more appropriate time in my life and its a book that I would recommend to anyone out there, horror/fantasy fans or not.
