Book Review: A walk in the woods.
Summary: 5 Stars
It is not the fantasy, but the reality - the exuberant reality of walking through the woods and across the mountains of England and Wales, which characterises these books. If you want to see beyond the pagan christianism, then look to the Author's Callanish and The Stonor Eagles, but nowhere will you find the same, wonderful life, flowing from Bracken, Rebecca and Boswell, Hulver, Rose and Rue .... as in these first succint 700 pages. The book wanders off near the end, when you can read the signs "sequel dead ahead", and they certainly have .... though particularly in the life of Rooster, Master of the Delve, the author rekindled some of the magic. However, from Duncton Wood, I made my own personal trek to Uffington and its White Horse, and later up to the River Wharfe ; and if the exact setting of Duncton Wood must remain a mystery, let the imagination dream. Perhaps the ambition is greater than the accomplishment, but I wish many more authors would have such an inkling.
