Book Reviews of Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and IndonesiaBook Review: read, read, read Summary: 4 StarsI had high hopes for this book after Julia Roberts recommended it in an article that I read...it fell a little short of my expectations, but not too far. While I loved Gilbert's writing style and her sense of humor, I did find some parts to be a little repetitive and whiny. I thoroughly enjoyed the first segment on Italy (it really made me want to go there!), was less enthralled with India (although this is where she discovers true spirituality, I think this section dragged on and on and on), and was pleasantly surprised by Indonesia ( a place where the joy and humor seemed to re-enter Gilbert's writing). All in all, it's a book I would recommend - not as a self-help manual, as some have suggested - but as an entertaining memoir that draws attention to several universal truths.
Book Review: Finding inner peace and fulfillment in this world is possible! Summary: 4 StarsThis book is an interesting recount of the author's year-long journey to Italy, India, and Indonesia to find inner peace and fulfillment after enduring personal hardship and strenuous circumstances. While Gilbert can be raw and seemingly arrogant at times in the narrative, she puts a lot on the table for one to consider and makes many insightful points along the way. Of particular interest is her time in India where it seems like true healing is beginning to take hold. The spiritual transformation that takes place during the course of the book is apparent yet accessible and gives hope to those navigating through their own personal battles that it is possible to recover and move into a higher place spiritually and leave all the baggage of this world behind.
Book Review: Enjoyable Thinking Book Summary: 5 StarsIn buying this travelogue, I bought with the intention of joining along the author's travels and 'virtually traveling.' I thought what a treat in in itself. She travels to Italy, India, and Indonesia.
Italy's stories are just laugh out loud funny and so refreshing. The tales from India show a little more thoughtfulness as she is studying at a guru's hideaway. And Indonesia is now winding down a year of fierce self study.
However throughout the entire book, the author has quite a delightful way of self reflecting thoughts and discussing some philosophical life questions in a light and playful manner that invites you to do the same. I found myself learning so much about myself and letting it plant little life questions in my head to ponder as I slept. Almost a subtle guide to philosophical and life questions we all should think about but never are triggered.
Loved it for the lightness, laughter, and thought-provoking discussions she brings to light. I read it with tremendous wonder.
Book Review: COMBINATION SELF-HELP & TRAVEL GUIDE Summary: 5 StarsI love to travel, especially to Italy but I can't always go when I'd like to. This book, however, can be picked up at any time and will transport you to other lands. Not only a great guide to great places on earth, but to the potential of the human experience. I love this book and go back to it time and again. Pamela D. Blair, Author & Psychotherapist The Next Fifty Years: A Guide for Women at Mid-Life And Beyond
Book Review: Eat, Pray, Love: A Fun Journey Summary: 5 StarsEat, Pray, Love is the story of one woman's journey to her soul. The story is compelling, funny, sad, joyful, engaging, and truly entertaining. Gilbert's writing style makes you feel like you are experiencing everything with her. If you have been to any (or all) of the countries she visits, it is easy to become nostalgic while reading her adventures. I have already recommended this book to many friends.
