Book Reviews of Echo Park (Harry Bosch)

Book Review: A masterpiece of the hard boiled
Summary: 5 Stars

Being a veteran reader of mystery novels I could never anticipate how Mr Connelly will play with the plot and with the characters and that is what it makes this novel powerful, special and different from others written by him or by other authors who believe themselves as masters of this genre. The ending is colossal. Overall, Echo Park lives up to all expectations set by all the acclaims written in the first pages by the media. Mr Bosch character portrayal is one of a kind. It is clear that Mr Connelly has greatly improved from his previous works. He creates and handles the plot with strokes resembling a quality only a top seed tennis player could get with a racket and ball

Book Review: A solid entry in the Harry Bosch series
Summary: 4 Stars

It seems that Connelly can do no wrong, this is yet another tense and surprising entry in this series. Installment after installment Connelly proves to be a master of the police procedural, sending his likable characters into disturbing crimes and very intense situations. This installment feels particularly different for reasons I will not get into. It may not pack quite the emotional punch of some other installments but Echo Park's a very worthwhile read for a Harry Bosch fan. Not a bad place to start, either.

The villain's interesting and among the best in the series. That said, Rachel Walling, one of the best things about The Narrows, just seems almost unnecessary here, and I felt like her presence grinded the story to a halt. The plot itself is also a bit thin in the 1st half of the book, not really taking off until the mid-point.

That said, it's a great book....again, not the best in the series but up there.

Book Review: America's Best Mystery Writer
Summary: 5 Stars

In a country (or world) FILLED with good mystery writers, Michael Connelly rears his complex head well above all the others. His major character, Harry Bosch, is fascinating, layered, flawed and brilliant. The cases Connelly invents are frequently based on real-life incidents, which give them a realistic punch. And despite the fact that these novels are clearly character driven, they are execptionally brilliant procedurals. For my money his only competition is from Ian Rankin (in Scotland) and Henning Mankell (in Sweden). And one of the side things I love so much about Mr. Connelly is that he often pays written homage to Mr. Rankin in his own books. Lovely man.

Book Review: Best Bosch yet
Summary: 5 Stars

All the entries in the Harry Bosch series have been good, but Echo Park is the best yet. The first few chapters set up the mystery, and from there on out, the action and suspense ratchet up and never stop. Even the final wrap up is a page turner. An open and shut case turns into a first rate conundrum, and Bosch has never been in a tougher position, trying to separate fact from emotion, trying to follow his own compass. His partner's been taken down, the woman in his life has trouble reconciling her roles as lover and profiler, and Bosch himself has been taken for a ride. High jingo strikes again. But for Harry, it's always a question of making choices that will allow him to live with himself, and no case has ever made that more of a challenge.
First rate crime fiction, with outstanding characterization and plotting.

Book Review: Connelly delivers with Harry Bosch again
Summary: 5 Stars

Echo Park includes all the positives from Connelly's Harry Bosch series. You have an unsolved murder case that comes to light 13 years later when a killer is caught and confesses to the old crime. Bosch isn't so sure and continues to investigate. The trail leads through betrayal some twists and dead ends and offers suspense and fast paced action. Bosch also reconnects with a previous flame from the FBI, as they work together on this case.

Another excellent thriller.
