Book Review: A 3.5 Star Rating is More Appropriate

I started reading this book and immediately liked the writing style and wanted to really enjoy it. But before I get into the actual review, let me just explain a couple things about the story.
This story is written by a third party... or so says the author. The author says that this book was handed to him by another person to have published. Is that really the case? I don't know. But if it is, it needs to be re-edited so that it's clear it's not him writing it. If it is him using another name as a means to "cover up" the true author... then I don't see why he did it.
Now the story takes place post apocalypse where zombies have taken over New York. Having once lived in New York... I can relate to the city somewhat. But what's great is the first chapter in how it starts off.
Ok... so I read the beginning and we have this attack and a well detailed fight scene. It's how zombie movies, games, and books should be. Nail scratching, fist swinging, guns blazing, and zombies biting. You get a good sense of how the book will go from there.
Unfortunately you also start to see where the book has its faults. First off I absolutely can't STAND grammatical errors in a book. It's the kind of things that a number of people should have caught before being sent off to the presses and the errors should have been fixed. Lots of spelling and lots of grammar mistakes that pop out every couple pages drives me nuts.
Then we come to the most bothersome part of the book. It starts jumping all over the place from present to past, to near present to past, to present, to past... etc. You get a new name of a character added and then they're gone for pages while the author goes into the past. I ended up confusing the characters in the first portion of the book until the past caught up to the present and things began to clear up.
The story takes place (for the most part) in and around Eden a fortified section of the city (I picture about 4 city blocks worth in a circle, maybe less). When the characters run out of supplies, they go in search of things to help hold out. I guess I'd see something like that happening in the event of a zombie attack. So it was very believable... though I have no idea how they managed to build the entire wall without being overrun in the meantime. It never was explained all that well, nor were a few points in the story. Again, I blame the jumping around.
Now what the story lacked it most certainly made up for in character depth and the ability to be both intelligent and crude all at the same time. The author was good at plugging in items that we have today, which made it believable and understandable. I could picture myself in that kind of scenario using similar items to pass the time. He was also able to blend characters into the story well though I was left with a question or two here and there (like how someone who's been straight his whole life working around kids suddenly without remorse can kill).
All in all a decent read that I wanted to give 5 stars, but felt it needed a 3.5 star rating... I went for the middle ground. Of all the zombie books I've read thus far, this has been the most entertaining and fun to read. No sci-fi voodoo space aliens, or government plots in this story. Just all out zombie madness.
