Book Reviews of Ellen FosterBook Review: Amy's Review Summary: 5 Stars
Critic, Amy Carnes, rated the book, Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons with five stars. "Ellen Foster blew my mind" said Amy. It is like real life events. The young girl in the book is a girl of great mind. She tells you,in an adult way, about her life in the past. The way the book jumps back from the future to the present gives the reader another way of viewing a story. Unlike most books, this is written in a different format. Something knew and different for a change. Because the young girl, Ellen, thinks like an adult,it helps older people to understand it. Most books with young people being the narrator is hard to comprehend, but this one, no way! "I understood Ellen because of the way she thinks, she thinks like me. This is an amazing story about the truth. Things like this story really do happen. It woke me up on the way foster children can really be hurt." If you thought that a child could not take care of themselves alone, read this book and your view will change. "My view definitely changed, on children when I read this story. I realize now that they do need some credit for their abilities. A child is no longer what they used to be and this book shows it all. Ellen dazzled me with her mind and her soul." Ellen is a young girl with an adult mind. When children need to think big, Ellen shows, that they think extra big. Kaye Gibbons, take a bow for this is your moment. Kaye Gibbons is the author of this book and she received five stars. Kaye Gibbons really got the drift on what people like and understand. "I would like to thank, Kaye, for writing this book. I got a knew view on story order and I loved the story, it was so real."
Book Review: An Excellent Book!!! Summary: 5 Stars
An 11 year old girl is born into a bad life. Her mother dies and her father drinks constantly. The poor girl drifts from one foster home to another, in search of someone who really wants her. Finally, this brave young girl finds the perfect place to stay. I read this book in one night and all I can say is WOW!!! What I liked about Ellen Foster is that it portrays a terrible life without being graphic. She isn't happy with her life, so unlike so many other books in which the main character suffers through the misery, she proves herself to be worthy of more and takes action to change things:)
Book Review: An easy read that was sweet Summary: 4 Stars
This is an easy read about a young girl looking for love. Little Miss Ellen goes through some tough times that many adults could not handle. But she arrives on the other side thankfully with few scars. Ms. Gibbons describes how innocence can be lost and regain when someone loves you. This novel makes you think, cry and rejoice when she finally finds love. This is one of the better books that Oprah has selected.
Book Review: An excellent choice! Summary: 5 Stars
I thought the book was excellent. I couldn't put it down. It really made me realize how rough some kids had it growing up and how lucky I was to grow up in such a loving home.
Book Review: Another Kaye Gibbons classic Summary: 4 Stars
Our Book Club read this as one of our selections and we enjoyed it. We has also read Gibbon's On The Occasion of My Last Afternoon. Gibbons has a way with the South and bring it to life in her novels. We all wanted a sequel to Ellen Foster so we could find out what happens to her later in life. Very easy read but packed with a great story.
