Book Reviews of Elsewhere

Book Review: Fantastic Book !
Summary: 5 Stars

I picked this book up at the library and thought I would give it a try, boy am I glad I did ! Elsewhere is a sad but wonderful story at the same time. Its in young adult but im 45 and couldnt put it down . My older sister passed away almost 3 years ago and after reading this book I felt somewhat uplifted . Cant really explain it well. I intend to buy this book and share it with my 13 yr old daughter and tell all my friends about it. The author captures the feel of youth and adulthood ,life and death so well and it is incredibly well written.I cant wait to read other books by this author. All I can say is give it a try , you wont be sorry.

Book Review: Good Writing: Characters Not So Good
Summary: 3 Stars

I liked the book and the storyline was interesting but I did not like the main character, Liz. Liz is immature, which is probably what the author was going for since this book is about maturity, but I had a hard time reading about her when she kept talking about how this sweet character was a horrible person just because she loved her (Emily) own husband. Another reason why I didn't like Liz was because she didn't think Emily would come and so she started a relationship with Emily's husband and when Emily did come Liz didn't expect the relationship to stop. Liz even at one point asked the dog of the man she had the relationship with if she was angry at him, but she never asked the wife nor did she apologize.

Liz is painted as the typical teenager, dog loving and jeans wearing, she is not different or unusual or even "weird".

I liked the book but I did not like Liz. My favorite characters were Betty and Curtis and Emily. I think people should read this book but I just wanted to warn them about Liz.

Book Review: Good book
Summary: 5 Stars

Extremely amazing idea about death, life after death and an adventure could not be missed

Book Review: Good teen read but lacks something
Summary: 4 Stars

As others have written, Elsewhere is a wonderful book for young teens. It follows the life and death of Elizabeth Hall, a 15-year-old who finds herself in the afterlife after a fatal bike accident. Zevin is marvelous and creative, constructing a "death" that bears a strong resemblance to life on Earth. Her interpretation of reincarnation is very interesting and thought-provoking.

My only criticism of the book would be the expression of emotions and character development. Many of the characters seemed to lack a unique personality, and their dialogue was sometimes dry. I wish the book might have been a bit longer, and provided further details. Overall, however, it was a pleasant read.

Book Review: Great Concept, Poor Execution
Summary: 2 Stars

I began reading this book with high hopes because of the back cover. However, the more I began to read, the more ANNOYING the way it was written got to me. There were many many times when I wanted to rewrite the parts for the author for the sake of the book's moment. I have never even thought that a book might not be worth the money but this one certainly was not worth my money. I think I just might return it. It's in well enough condition seeing as how little it took me to read it. I loved the dogs, though. Aldous Ghent was also quite hilarious. I give this book two starts, though because I do believe it had some good moments. Overall, I give it a huge PUHLEASE and I WISH I LIKED YOU MORE.
