Book Review: Political statements in a thriller?

Jason Harrow is happily married and very much a reformed man. And then he receives a call from an ex-girlfriend who fears her daughter is in serious trouble. Jason eventually finds her and the story expands to involve a terrorist plot. He does his best to right the wrongs he sees while at the same time wondering if he is going mad, as his mother before him did.
This book seemed to arouse quite some controversy on the US Amazon site. One reviewer argued that there was too much sordid sex, but to me this would be clear over-statement (there is nothing explicit). Others saw it as a great thriller, while some thought it contained too much right-wing hype.
I didn't find the book to be a political mouthpiece although Klavan clearly has some views he did want to express through Jason. Then again, perhaps there is more depth to the book than I give it credit for. I categorized it as a thriller primarily - here the book scores reasonably highly with its page-turning action which, towards the end, regrettably sees Jason enter more and more unlikely scenarios. I am not sure Klavan did enough with his characters, with the exception of Jason as the lead. There wasn't the richness of writing I expected either.
I like Andrew Klavan and regard "True Crime" as one of the best novels I've ever read. He disappointed greatly with "Damnation Street", however. With "Empire of Lies" I think he has fallen between the two extremes - this is not a great novel, but nor is it a disaster. 7/10
