Book Reviews of Endless LoveBook Review: Absolutely amazing Summary: 5 Stars
I just finished this book a few minutes ago and cannot stop crying. It's not a sappy love story as the title might suggest; it's about obsession, about that one person you could never, ever quite get over, about never losing hope that one day they'll remember how it was to be with you and that maybe they'll come back.
You can't help but root for David throughout the book, even as he (as one reviewer put it) starts making some really bad decisions.
I was tearing up throughout the book, both for David's loss and for his happiness, but the end left me devastated. If you've ever been through this kind of thing, you'll idenitify with this book a lot.
Spencer is a master of words. Amazing.
Book Review: An Intense Trip to Nowhere Summary: 4 Stars
After reading Men In Black, I decided to give this "classic" a spin. Interestingly, my opinion is largely the same.... Spencer's characters don't change much from beginning to end, so for those who expect a book to be a journey, you could be disappointed. However, I don't disagree with any other review in the slightest... I had a lot of trouble putting this book down, and the emotions were of an intensity that's hard to find in a book... There's also a lot of interesting undertones about the psychiatric community... ie: releasing David when his moral character is arguably at its most dangerous. This is an excellent read... just don't expect a wonderous journey from point a to point b... It's actually point a to point a, but a fun time getting there.
Book Review: COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN Summary: 5 Stars
I read this several years ago. I started reading a roommate's copy and was hooked from the first few pages. Scott Spencer's writing is incredible in this book, and, the story is really compelling. I especially love the character of Ann Butterfield, Jade's mother, since she sort of grounded the story for me by defining the period
(60's /70's ---that moment when that sort of idealistic and sometimes toxic 60's concept of freedom and experimentation hit the suburbs).
At the time I originally read "Endless Love", the sexual passages were revelatory, and I find, upon review, that they still are. A big difference now, is that writers have the benefit of using the ones contained in this book as a reference point --Endless Love was a huge book in its' day, so, this does not seem a far-fetched claim.
When I bring this book up to friends, some scoff. The film version has shamed this fantastic book. I, too, would welcome a new, true-to-story film of this book.
Book Review: Deep, Emotional & Intense! Summary: 5 Stars
This book is wonderful. It touches you on so many levels. This dark love story really tinkers on an obsession rather than a true love story. The story is very deep, emotional, consuming, at times depressing & desparate, intense & complex. There are pages & pages of a detailed and explicit love making session. You feel David's love, obsession, passion & eventual loss. David never gets over Jade - he cannot let go. Never. He simply can't. The book is written from David's point of view - only. We never know what Jade is thinking or feeling about David. There is not alot of character development for Jade & she makes her appearance half way through the book. We never hear her side of this story. How does Jade feel about David? Is she in love with him & as obsessed as he is with her? What is it about her that makes him act so crazy & desparate? We never really know. Which is a shame.
I wish more was written about David & Jade's earliest days together, when the meet and start the passionate relationship. Parts of the story seem missing, alot of time lapses, too. These are teenagers, not adults, who are too young to deal with a love & sexual relationship this intense & overwhelming.
This is a very sad story. Don't read it if you are feeling depressed or getting over a break up yourself. The last few lines of this book are heartbreaking, it leaves you feeling empty, sad & yet at the same time, not wanting the book to end.
I would really recommend you reading this book.
Book Review: Do not die without reading this book Summary: 5 Stars
This book absolutely SLAYS me. I've read it numerous times and it is, in my opinion, a masterpiece of modern fiction. The first sentence reels you in, the last page knocks you dead, and everything in between is so amazing and original, I can't even describe it. Just buy it. By the way, when I first saw a picture of author Scott Spencer, I was astonished that he didn't look a thing like David. But that's how true this book seems.
This is NOT light romantic reading for sissies--and I despise that silly new cover--but if you are a bright person with a good vocabulary, do not miss this book.
