Book Review: A Welcome Addition for Adult and College ESL Students
Summary: 3 Stars
Lenny Bruce would be proud of this thin book that celebrates one of the most frequently uttered words in English. The book, with its somewhat shocking and sophomoric title, is exactly what you would expect. Adults tired of inane, pointless grammar exercises in many ESL classes and high school and college English language learners bored and disgusted by the insipid, hyper-academic language deployed for TOEFL prep classes often find this book refreshing. It is certainly more real than 90% of the ESL textbooks out there!
On the other hand, this is a one-trick pony. The vulgar language, while a refreshing antidote in small doses, becomes tiresome and predictable. Better for teenagers than linguists.
Yet I used to keep it on my community college bookshelf as work as an example of the American free speech movement - and a challenge to very questionable "most frequently used word lists" that censor real language. It kept the language lessons real. Curse words, after all, do exist even if they have no place in our classrooms. Being able to both understand and vividly express anger seems like a vital life skill for often-stressed ESL students.
