Book Reviews of Enna Burning (Books of Bayern)Book Review: Burning Bright Summary: 5 Stars
Enna is a character from The Goose Girl. She is the first real friend Isi (Ani) has and does her job admirably well. When the story opens, Enna is at home because her mother has just died. She and her brother get along, but something is happening with him that is quite strange: he's irritable and mad at the king, and is so upset that he starts Enna's legs on fire. You didn't see that last one coming, did you?
With war fast approaching the Bayern kingdom, something needs to be done, and fast. When Isi and her husband come to the forest born for help, they even enlist Leifer (Enna's brother). What they all don't know about Leifer's secret is about to change in a drastic way: he can start fires by inhaling the heat from people and objects around him and expelling it at other people and objects. This skill proves to be invaluable in battle, and Enna sees her brother in action, and sees what the fire does to him. When he won't teach her, she ends up learning herself and almost being consumed by the fire just like her brother. Will Enna be able to survive the fire and help save her friends and country? Will she succumb to the enemy in a way she never could have imagined before the fire became a part of her life?
Enna's journey to self-discovery is fraught with more perils than your average person encounters in a lifetime, yet she stands up for what she believes in and does the best she can, but will it be enough to save herself and her home?
Notes on the Cover:
I know I already said that I like all three covers, but this one is by far my favorite. Enna commands your attention with a backdrop of red and gold fire behind her. I am just drawn to this cover!
Book Review: Completely enchanting Summary: 4 Stars
Two years after helping her friend Isi take back her rightful place as princess, Enna is back in the forest, tending her family home after her mother's death. One night, her brother Leifer shows up with a strange vellum and the power to conjure fire out of nothing. When he seems to be losing control of this power, Enna goes to Isi. But Isi and Geric are also dealing with serious problems of their own: war is coming to Bayern, and it has put Enna is a very precarious position.
Shannon Hale's sequel to The Goose Girl is a bit more serious as she broaches the topics of war and death, but nonetheless Enna Burning still contains some of the same humorous and lovable characters and magical, enchanting forces that charmed readers of The Goose Girl. Enna's character is strong willed and solid, and her sly sense of humor will appeal to readers. Hale builds suspense throughout the book as Enna and her friends discover their powers aren't what they first appeared, and struggle for a way to end the war. Brisk, exciting, and nicely satisfying, Enna Burning is a wonderful fantasy read.
Book Review: Cute Summary: 3 Stars
My first impression upon finishing the book was "it's cute". Then, I reminded myself that the book's intended audience is twelve and that made me feel better. Enna Burning is equally as clean as Goose Girl, it's predecessor, and is a creative and inventive story of Isi's friend Enna who learns how to speak to fire. The land of Bayern is now at war and Enna believes that her new skills can help save her homeland. Enna has a mighty adventure as she learns how to control the fire and not let it control her. The writing is simple but that is appropriate for the audience and I believe that my daughter will enjoy this series in a few years.
Book Review: Decent Sequel with a Satisfying Ending Summary: 4 Stars
"Enna Burning" continues the story from "The Goose Girl". This book was written so it could be read as a sequel or on its own. That is why I love it. It has a strong story line with twists that help you understand the characters and wonder about right and wrong. It has good depth and considers self-control and balance. However, in some areas it lingered too long or passed too quickly and left some explanations needing more depth. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy that is deep in personal relationships.
Book Review: Dramatic and Satisfying Summary: 5 Stars
In the second story of the "Books of Bayern" series, continuing on from The Goose Girl, we become better acquainted with Enna, Isi's friend. And as soon as we see events and people from Enna's point of view, we are confronted with a new and deadly ability: the ability to burn. Enna, at the beginning of the book, ends up with the gift of fire...and from then on, she is constantly struggling to control the burning and use the fire properly. As war explodes between Bayern and Tira, Enna longs to use her gift for good...and attempts to burn for Bayern repeatedly. Somehow, the fire becomes too difficult to control, and after several rash moves, she is captured by a Tiran soldier. In a Tiran camp, she must choose the side on which she will fight; Enna must chose to end the war in favor of Tira or Bayern. In a dramatic ending, Enna choses her side with devasting effects and a surprising ending ties up the first two books of Bayern with a satisfying stich. Though darker, "Enna Burning" is an exciting sequel to "The Goose Girl". :)
*note for parents: Enna is placed in a situation where a young man rubs her stomach. The book might be better for 15 years old and up, depending on each family's standards.
