As a neighbor of Martha Stewart's in the charming town of Westport, Connecticut, I have had the pleasure of being invited into her home several times. Granted, that ended around the time she became so well-known, but Martha is a truly wonderful woman who is an encyclopedia of entertainment know-how. Fortunately for the rest of the world, this book is *the* next best thing to having Martha in the kitchen and at the party with you. Creative recipies, table settings, and other ideas which help to enhance the environment of any party- large or small.I feel that this book should be a part anyone's home library who can appreciate the fine art of entertaining and wishes to take their gatherings and functions to the next level.

Book Review: The original 1980 ENTERTAINING book by Martha Stewart

This book was issued in 1980. I bought this book as soon as it came out because it was advertised so much and hailed as such a "terrific" book.
Honestly, even in the 1980's I could never understand why this book was such a hit! Most of the recipes are not reproduceable, even for a large catering company. The photos are pretty, but the ideas seemed over-the-top, even back in 1980.
Since the 1980's Martha has re-vamped this book and updated the ideas and recipes. I have not wanted to buy the later 1990 issued ENTERTAINING book since I'd heard that it was not that much more inspiring than the 1980 version.
There are many other books out there on the subject of "entertaining" that are more relevant and doable (for an average housewife like most of us).
This 1980 version is now out-of-print, but you'll still be able to find it in second-hand stores, and sometimes it comes up on AMAZON. But, I'd recommend flipping through the pages (in person) before buying this 1980 book.

This book is Martha Stewart's first major work that put her on the train to success. "Entertaining" is a classic book and over 20 years old. It is so much fun and is so very interesting to read now because Martha's career is so well known, and it is to a large extent based upon the great ideas that she placed in this book. Martha wrote this book in her prime and filled it with ideas, recipes and decorating tips. The reader will learn how to put on the party of a lifetime.
