Book Reviews of EscapeBook Review: A compelling page-turner Summary: 5 Stars
It's hard to put this book down. I read it almost non-stop. It's shocking, compelling, and takes you inside polygamy, with all of its abuses and pretention. It's easy to see why the women interviewed on TV recently when their children were taken by the State of Texas looked like zombies. I'm sure they were under threats to not reveal what was really going on. It is hard to understand how this kind of savagery against women and children in the name of religion exists in the U.S.
Book Review: A fascinating memoir of the struggle of a women in polygamist sect Summary: 5 Stars
Escape is the story of Carolyn Jessop who was born in polygamist family. The book covers the story of her upbringing, her youth, marriage to a man 30 years older and father of her classmates in high school, interactions with her husbands family, constant pregnancies, sickness of her kids and her eventual escape from the FLDS church. Its one of the best memoirs I have read and she describes the intricate details of her day to day life very beautifully. The book gives a lot of details about the day to day activities of a polygamist family and how they make it through the day. Even simple things we take for granted like laundry in a family, do not remain the same once you have a family of over 30 people. Its a minor thing, but I can't imagine how can a wife call her husband "Father", and how can be okay with it. Hats off to Carolyn for going through all the struggles which she had to go through with her kids and their upbringing. Overall, its an excellent read for anyone who wants to know more about the functioning of FLDS or any polygamist family.
Book Review: A must read Summary: 5 Stars
This book will tug at your heart from the first page through the last. It is appalling to think that so many are still living through the nightmare which Ms. Jessop was somehow (despite her upbringing) resilient enough to overcome. She should be commended for her courage in sharing her story with so many. Have the tissues ready and be ready for a long night because you won't want to put this book down.
Book Review: A must read! Summary: 5 Stars
This book is fascinating and sad all at the same time. It not only touches the victims of FLDS but anyone who has been in a abusive situation. Carolyn is an extraordinary woman! I applaud her courage and strength. I couldn't put this book down. It is a unique and current look into the FLDS. Carolyn and Laura Palmer are very descriptive and make it feel as if you are actually witnessing the events; which can be somewhat painful to read. I think it is an important book that should be read by all.
Book Review: A must read! Summary: 4 Stars
I heard about the book on Oprah and was intrigued by it...as soon as I opened it, I couldn't put it down! Carolyn Jessop's story is one of hope and survival in a world of abuse and horror...when reading it, you can only root for her freedom! It's a great book!
