Book Review: Satan's children join the Marvel universe

The first part of this book contains the early appearances of Daimon Hellstrom "the Son of Satan" from his first partial appearance in Ghost Rider #1-2 and his real encore in Marvel Spotlight #12 up to the complete 8 issue run of his own magazine.
I was torn over these stories, I bought many of these first time round as the first two Marvel Spotlight covers attracted my attention. Set in St. Louis the character is isolated from much of the Marvel universe for the first few years. The tales are pretty deep and cover all sorts of demonic possession as he fights against his father to protect humanity. In the beginning Daimon turns into the SoS at night but over time he gets the power to control the change.
He also travels back in time to Atlantis to meet sorceress Zhered-Na last seen in an old Man-Thing tale. We also get to see the bitter ending that Adam, the first man, is subjected to. The last few tales included here with Mindstar and Anubis raise the bar considerably on what had gone before, some of the artwork is patchy but is generally acceptable.
The Satana tales are a different matter, they are more adult based and unlike her brother Daimon, she starts off following in her father's footsteps. Her costume is pretty amazing and would turn mens heads faster than Linda Blair's in the exorcist.
These tales are largely the work of Chris Claremont's mind with some great assists along the way and artwork firstly by John Romita then a succession of brilliant artists (forgiving the lacklustre art on Marvel Premiere 27). The highlights being the stunning Damnation Waltz and the two issue Marvel Team-Up where she dies.
Most of these tales were from the large size magazines Vampire Tales, Haunt of Horror and Marvel Preview which were in black and white so you see them pretty much as they were intended, albeit smaller. Also included are a few prose Satana tales from those magazines.
The strength of the Satana tales gives this a solid 4 stars. If it was just the Son of Satan tales I think 3 would have been more appropriate.
