Book Review: Addictive, Entertaining
Summary: 4 Stars
I would have liked to give a slightly higher rating for this first book in the Evernight series, like a 4.5. Because it was REALLY well written with some very compelling characters, snappy dialog (with teens who sound and act like teens...well, aside from the supernatural stuff), and cool plot twists. But there were a few iffy bits which kept me from giving the full five stars.
The Good:
- Fabulous, age-appropriate dialog (really important to me. nothing worse than 17-year olds who sound like they're in their 40s.
- What starts out as a same-old, same-old plot takes a drastic turn for the exciting and riveting halfway through the story...if you weren't already captivated by the start, you will be hanging on for dear life by this point.
- Likeable and compelling lead characters with quite a bit of depth, more than the average YA urban-fantasy.
The Not-So-Good:
- I was disappointed in how the Big Change for the female lead was handled. It seemed totally off that she'd been wandering around with this unusual and pretty crucial information about her family and their lifestyle and didn't bother to clue us in until after she realized her "true nature." It just didn't sit well with me and made her look a bit stupid or totally out of touch with, well, everything. It also felt anticlimactic.
- The whole "humans and vampires at school together" seemed choppy in places. For example, if the humans aren't supposed to know about the vamps, then why, in some classes, are they openly referring to the true ages of some vamp students? Wouldn't a human student in the same class wonder "WTF?!"
- Speaking of "true ages"...am I the only one who found it hard to imagine a bunch of thousand-year old vampires hanging out at a school with adolescent humans? And wearing uniforms? And sleeping in dorms with roommates? It'd be the equivalent of a bunch of grad school students enrolling in preschool. I mean, the author did attempt to explain that to make it more plausible. But it still felt awkward to me.
In spite of the plot inconsistencies and odd sections, this was still a damn good read. I'll definitely be picking up book two soon....and, if the improved ratings are anything to go by, it sounds like the story only gets better.
