Book Review: Great for dog lovers, but not for the rest of Susann's fanbase

I absolutely loved 'Valley of the Dolls', so I became curious about the rest of Jacqueline Susann's output. I came to 'Every Night, Josephine!' with no prior knowledge of the subject matter. Essentially, this book is an ode to Jacqueline's dog. It's a romp; a nice, easy, Sunday read. It's very charming, and you'll smile with appreciation at the jokes herein.
Personally, I've never owned a dog, nor do I particularly care for dogs. But by the end, even I was convinced that Josephine was something special. Josephine was so well loved, and so well fed, that her weight becomes an issue that warrants pages and pages in this book.
My agenda in reading this book was to gain further insight into Jacqueline Susann, as I wanted to get a little closer to the fascinating woman behind 'Valley'. This book does open up another dimension of Jacqueline's personality. There's a warmth, jocularity, and lightness here that are nowhere to be found in the disturbing and tragic 'Valley of the Dolls'.
However, no matter what way you slice it, unless you are a dyed in the wool dog lover, this is optional reading. It's entertaining and sweet, but ultimately there's a reason why 'Valley' will continue to resonate with generations to come, while this book remains out of print.
