Book Reviews of Executive Privilege

Book Review: A Killer President?
Summary: 5 Stars

It is an unfortunate event when the first book you read by an author is also his best. Such was my case with Phillip Margolin: after being wowed by his novel Gone But Not Forgotten, I became a quick fan. Many of his subsequent novels have been good, but few seemed to be on the same level as that initial book. Executive Privilege, however, seems to come pretty close.

In Washington, a young woman is apparently murdered by a serial killer known as the D.C. Ripper. For the FBI agents investigating the case, there are little inconsistencies that indicate a possible copycat. For private eye Dana Cutler, not only does she know the Ripper is not responsible, but she has a good idea who is: the President or at least one of his associates. Dana was following the victim as part of a job and has pictures of the victim and President having a heated argument (after a romantic liaison). Others know that Dana has this evidence, putting her on the run.

Meanwhile, Oregon attorney Brad Miller is investigating the appeal of another serial killer, one who vehemently insists he didn't kill one of his alleged victims. Brad will soon have cause to believe him, and in the process link that victim also to the President. He and Dana will eventually cross paths (the prologue reveals this) while various people in power try to stop them.

To those familiar with the Kevin Costner movie No Way Out (itself based on a movie called The Big Clock), there will seem to be some plot similarities, but Margolin has a twist or two extra. There are little flaws, but overall this is a solidly entertaining thriller that will definitely please Margolin's fans.
